Enzo Fernandez Faces Mixed Reactions from Chelsea Fans
Enzo Fernandez felt the split in the stands before he even touched the ball.
Chelsea beat Real Sociedad 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, but the scoreline was only half the story. The other half played out when Fernandez stepped over the white line.
Boos, then a change of tune
The World Cup-winning midfielder was introduced in the 64th minute, replacing Reece James. As James walked off, he handed Fernandez the captain’s armband – a small but symbolic gesture on a night that exposed fault lines in the fanbase.
According to French broadcaster RMC, a section of Chelsea supporters greeted Fernandez with jeers as he came on. It was his first appearance for the club since returning from the World Cup, where Argentina lost the final 1-0 to Spain.
Not everyone inside Stamford Bridge joined in. Another group of fans rose to applaud, determined to welcome him back and drown out the discontent. As the game settled, so did the mood. The hostility began to fade.
The atmosphere eventually flipped. As reported by Sky Sports, the boos gave way to chants of “Oh, Enzo Fernandez,” the crowd’s tone softening as the minutes ticked by and Chelsea closed out a convincing win.
Anger over transfer noise
The reaction did not come out of nowhere. It has been simmering all summer.
A portion of the Chelsea support remains furious with Fernandez, accusing him of pushing for a move away after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League. The sense of betrayal sharpened when, earlier in the summer, he publicly admitted he would like to play for Real Madrid one day. Those comments carried consequences: he was left out of the squad for two matches.
That context hung over every touch he took on Saturday. Every pass, every gesture, framed by a fanbase trying to decide whether to forgive, forget, or keep fighting its corner.
City interest adds more fuel
The transfer market has only intensified the scrutiny.
Manchester City have entered the race for Fernandez in recent days, with the European champions monitoring his situation as uncertainty surrounds Rodri’s future amid links to Barcelona. The presence of Enzo Maresca at City, his former Chelsea coach and a long-time admirer of his qualities, adds another layer to the story.
So Fernandez finds himself in a familiar modern-football storm: adored by some, doubted by others, courted from afar, and still wearing the armband of a club whose fans are not yet sure whether to embrace him or brace for goodbye.
The season has not even started, and already Stamford Bridge has a saga on its hands.
