That is the view of former City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who believes Enzo Maresca will push for a marquee midfield signing on top of the imminent arrival of Ayyoub Bouaddi.

City have already thrown serious money at reshaping the squad. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest in a £116million deal, with Lille’s 18‑year‑old prodigy Bouaddi expected to follow for around £86m. Maresca is not tinkering. He is ripping up the blueprint and sketching his own.

Chelsea, he expects, will be “busy between now and the window closing,” with Fernandez right at the heart of the debate over who stays and who is sacrificed.
