Manchester City Signs Niamh Charles from Chelsea for £500,000

Manchester City have raided a direct rival and prised away one of English football’s most decorated defenders, completing a £500,000 deal for England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea.

The 27-year-old left-back signs a three-year contract and walks into a squad that has just ended a decade-long wait for a Women’s Super League title. City are champions again and now arming themselves for the next step: Europe.

"I've seen from the outside and have obviously played against City over the past few years, and they had great success this year. What they're building as a team is something I wanted to be a part of. It's the perfect fit and hopefully we can have some good times together."

For Chelsea, her exit lands on the same day as the arrival of Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe from Arsenal. One top-level left-sided player out, another in. The champions of the Hayes era are being reshaped; City are the beneficiaries.
