Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernandez Amid Rodri Uncertainty

Manchester City are drawing up contingency plans for life without Rodri – and Enzo Fernandez sits near the top of the list.

Sources have told Football Insider that City are actively exploring a move for the Chelsea midfielder, with new manager Enzo Maresca described as a “big fan” of the Argentina international. The interest comes at a time when Rodri’s future at the Etihad looks increasingly uncertain this month, forcing the Premier League champions to weigh up expensive, high-profile solutions in the middle of the pitch.

Enzo on the radar – but at a price

Chelsea’s stance is clear. They would be prepared to sell Fernandez, but only if a suitable offer lands on the table, and their idea of “suitable” is steep. The London club have previously placed a valuation of up to £120million on the 25-year-old and intend to hold that line as far as possible.

City, despite their financial power, are not prepared to go that high. Not this summer, and not while they are already heavily committed elsewhere in midfield. The club have spent £116m to bring Elliot Anderson into Maresca’s squad, and are still working on another major deal for Ayyoub Bouaddi.

That outlay shapes everything. Any move for Fernandez would have to sit beneath Chelsea’s top-end valuation, and at present there is little room for negotiation. Chelsea want £120m. City are exploring, not indulging.

Bouaddi first, Fernandez if the door opens

Inside the Etihad, Bouaddi remains the priority. City have been in talks with Lille for months over the Moroccan midfielder, yet the saga has not reached its decisive phase. A fee in the region of £100m is expected to be required to get that transfer over the line.

That figure alone makes a second nine-figure investment in Fernandez unlikely on the face of it. One blockbuster midfielder is normal business for City. Two in the same window is another level of aggression entirely.

But the equation may yet change.

Maresca could be dealing with not one, but two departures in central midfield. Alongside the uncertainty over Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders is being linked with a move away from Manchester before the 1 September deadline. If both leave, City’s recruitment strategy shifts from fine-tuning to full rebuild.

In that scenario, the idea of signing both Bouaddi and Fernandez stops looking extravagant and starts looking like necessity.

Reijnders weighs up his future

Reijnders’ situation adds a fresh layer of tension to City’s midfield planning. As revealed by Football Insider, the Dutchman could be tempted to push for an exit if he sees no sign of an increased role under Maresca.

The numbers from last season tell the story. Reijnders made 50 appearances in all competitions, but only 19 of those came as Premier League starts. At 28, with his prime years ticking by, he wants more than a rotational brief.

If that dissatisfaction hardens into a transfer push, City’s hierarchy will suddenly find themselves with both space and money to manoeuvre. Two midfielders out, two in. Bouaddi as the long-term project, Fernandez as the ready-made operator with Champions League and World Cup pedigree.

For now, City are probing, Chelsea are holding firm, and the market is waiting for the first big domino to fall. Rodri’s decision, Reijnders’ patience, and Lille’s resolve over Bouaddi will decide whether Enzo Fernandez becomes the next marquee name to walk through the doors at the Etihad – or remains the £120m midfielder City refused to chase.
