Manchester City Target Bouaddi as Rodri Nears Barcelona Exit

Manchester City are preparing for a seismic reshaping of their midfield, closing in on Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille in a move that is set to open the door for Rodri’s departure to Barcelona.

Bouaddi, just 18 and already a full Morocco international, has agreed personal terms with City. The hard part now is the fee. Lille value the teenager at around €100m (£85m), a figure that underlines how highly he is rated and how determined the French club are to extract maximum value before letting him go.

Enzo Maresca wants him now, not later. City’s new manager is pushing for Bouaddi to be integrated straight into the first-team squad rather than being eased in slowly or sent on loan. With the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday and the Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth on 23 August, Maresca is trying to lock down his midfield before the season’s first whistle is blown.

The stakes are obvious. Bouaddi’s arrival would effectively clear the path for Rodri to leave.

Rodri, Barcelona and a deal waiting to happen

Barcelona are confident. They believe Rodri can be prised from Manchester, but their opening move has fallen short. An initial €45m bid was rejected last week, and they will have to come back with more if they want to anchor their midfield with one of Europe’s most reliable operators.

City, for their part, are almost reconciled to losing the 30-year-old. Rodri has just a year left on his contract, and the club know the clock is ticking. Letting him go this summer, with Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson arriving, would be a painful but calculated reset rather than a forced surrender.

Anderson, signed last month from Nottingham Forest for £116m, is already part of Maresca’s blueprint. The midfield that once revolved around the experience and guile of Bernardo Silva is being rebuilt in real time, and rebuilt around youth. Bouaddi would step into a dressing room that is changing quickly, with responsibility coming early for players barely out of their teens.

They are interested in Leicester City’s teenage midfielder Louis Page. The 18-year-old has drawn firm admiration from both United and Arsenal, but United are understood to be hopeful of striking a deal, with Page believed to favour a switch to Old Trafford.

For a club that has spent years talking about a long-term rebuild, this is the kind of deal that has to be nailed. Arsenal’s presence in the race adds pressure, but also underlines the scale of Page’s potential.

Rashford back in camp, future still in play

There is another subplot at United. Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad at their County Kildare training camp after a post-World Cup break, stepping back into a club he has technically never left but has been distant from for some time.

The 28-year-old has spent the last season and a half out on loan, first at Barcelona and then at Aston Villa, after a breakdown in his relationship with a club executive and former head coach Ruben Amorim. That rift effectively pushed him to the fringes, even as his name remained on United’s books.

Now, the mood has shifted. Relations have eased, and Rashford is focused on working under Michael Carrick. The new manager offers a fresh start and a different voice, and Rashford has a chance to reassert himself at a club that once saw him as its future.

Yet nothing is guaranteed. He could still leave before the end of the window if the right offer arrives and if United decide that a clean break suits all parties.
