Man Utd’s Ederson Deal Faces Uncertainty: What’s Next?

Manchester United’s move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has hit a serious snag, but the deal is not quite on the scrapheap yet.

United had shaken hands on a £35million fee, with a further £3.8m in add-ons, more than a month ago. Personal terms on a four-year contract were also wrapped up, and the transfer was pencilled in for early July. On paper, it was straightforward. Then the details started to bite.

Ederson’s late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad pushed the timeline back. He completed part of his medical in the United States while on international duty, before undergoing further examinations once Brazil were knocked out by Norway in the last 16. Those extra checks changed the mood.

Medical tests flagged concerns over a knee injury the 27-year-old suffered last season. What had looked like a routine big-money signing suddenly became a far more delicate negotiation.

The pressure around the deal has only grown. Reports in Italy have claimed the transfer is off and that Atalanta are preparing to reward Ederson with a new five-year contract. From Bergamo’s side, the message is clear: if United hesitate, they will look after their man.

United’s stance is more nuanced. They have not closed the door. The club remain open to completing the signing but now want to renegotiate the structure of the agreement in light of the medical findings. A straight £35m-plus-add-ons deal is no longer guaranteed. A reworked package, potentially more performance-based or protected against long-term risk, is firmly on the table.

At the same time, Old Trafford is not standing still. United have already agreed a £50m deal with Chelsea for 22-year-old Andrey Santos, a move that underlines both their determination to refresh the midfield and their willingness to pivot quickly in the market.

There is also a shortlist of alternatives to Ederson. High among them is Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. His own summer has been a transfer saga in miniature. Gomes had been lined up for a switch to Atletico Madrid after the Spanish club themselves backed away from a deal for Ederson. That path closed when Atletico signed Morten Hjulmand from Sporting instead.

Gomes is still expected to leave Molineux in this window, and his name remains active in United’s discussions as they weigh whether to keep pushing for Ederson or shift decisively to other targets.

For now, Ederson sits in the grey zone that defines so many modern transfers: agreed, but not secure; coveted, but complicated. United must decide whether to absorb the medical risk and trust their original judgement, or walk away and reshape their midfield with fresher, safer legs.

One way or another, the next move in this midfield rebuild will say plenty about how ruthless – and how bold – Manchester United are prepared to be.
