Five Manchester United Academy Talents Ready to Support Michael Carrick This Season

Following a quiet summer transfer window, Michael Carrick faces the challenge of strengthening Manchester United’s squad. With only Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos arriving for a combined £85m (£115m), the team still lacks the depth needed for a serious title challenge, especially with Champions League commitments ahead. Yet, hope remains in the club’s rising youth prospects.

The signings of 18-year-olds Tynan Thompson and Cristian Orozco have flown under the radar but add important options on the left wing and defensive midfield. Alongside them, a wave of academy talents emerged during pre-season, ready to fill crucial gaps.

JJ Gabriel

Not yet 16, JJ Gabriel is already one of England’s most talked-about youngsters. Last season, he scored 29 goals in 32 games, helping United reach the FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League Cup finals. Awarded U18 Premier League Player of the Season, Gabriel earned his senior debut in a friendly against Atletico Madrid, showcasing skillful touches, pace, and two-footed unpredictability.

Gabriel operates mainly as a forward who excels cutting in from the left but can also play as a No.10. His versatility might prove vital given uncertainties around Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee, and Benjamin Sesko’s shin injury. Though his physical adaptation to Premier League football remains to be seen, his technical abilities are undeniable.

Jim Thwaites

Jim Thwaites made a strong impression in the same friendly versus Atletico, completing 86% of his passes in nine minutes. He followed up with a goal and commanding midfield performance in the U21s’ 5-1 win over Ipswich. Often compared to Paul Scholes for his vision, passing range, and work rate, Thwaites plays maturely under pressure and is a reliable shield for the defense.

With Manuel Ugarte sidelined until the new year due to an ACL injury, Thwaites could strengthen United’s defensive midfield. He combines press resistance with line-breaking ability and can deliver dangerous set-piece balls. His footballing intelligence aligns with Carrick’s style, suggesting the coach has significant plans for him.

Shea Lacey

Last season, Shea Lacey appeared three times for United’s first team, notably in an FA Cup match against Brighton where he impressed despite a second yellow card sending him off. His determination remained intact, and after overcoming injury and suspension, Lacey stood out on the summer tour.

Lacey scored a fine goal in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg and earned a penalty against Atletico with clever footwork. Comfortable as an attacking midfielder behind Bryan Mbeumo, he offers creative flair and excellent close control. Although Mbeumo and Amad Diallo sit ahead of him, Lacey’s mental toughness and versatility make him an important backup across wide and central positions.

Jacob Devaney

Jacob Devaney returned to United after a strong loan spell at St Mirren, where he played a key role in their Scottish Premiership survival. He featured in pre-season games against Wrexham and Rosenborg as a center-half, despite being a natural central midfielder. Carrick praised Devaney’s confident and commanding display in an unfamiliar position.

Devaney captains the U21s and demonstrates leadership qualities that are rare beyond players like Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire. While he may consider another move if first-team minutes remain scarce, Carrick would benefit from keeping him involved.

Dan Armer

Dan Armer is familiar with playing as a center-back and impressed during substitute appearances in friendlies against Wrexham, Rosenborg, and Atletico. At 6ft 4in, Armer’s physical presence and tactical understanding remind fans of Harry Maguire, who praised his performances and progress.

With Matthijs de Ligt injured and Lisandro Martinez carrying knocks, United’s center-back options are limited to Maguire, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and Armer. His maturity and hunger could give him the clearest path to regular starts. Carrick stands to gain by integrating these young players into his squad.
