Malang Sarr Leaves RC Lens as Exodus Continues

The spine of RC Lens is being ripped out piece by piece, and on Tuesday another key name slipped out of the door. Malang Sarr, one of the pillars of last season’s success, has left the club at the end of his contract.

His departure follows a pattern that has become impossible to ignore. Captain Adrien Thomasson has already gone, leaving on a free to join Stade Rennais. Allan Saint-Maximin’s short-term deal ran its course and he moved on as well. Pierre Sage, the coach who delivered a Coupe de France triumph and an outstanding second-place finish in Ligue 1 in just one season, has swapped the Stade Bollaert for the Premier League and Crystal Palace.

Now Sarr joins the list.

Lens confirmed that the defender’s contract would expire on 30 June, drawing a line under a spell that began in the 2024/25 season after his mutually agreed exit from Chelsea. What looked like a career drifting off track suddenly found a new pulse in the north of France.

At the Stade Bollaert, Sarr rebuilt himself. The former OGC Nice defender and France youth international became a constant in the back line, a reliable presence in a team punching above its financial weight. Last season alone, he featured 39 times in all competitions, anchoring a defence that underpinned Lens’ domestic success and cup glory.

Across his time with Les Sang et Or, Sarr amassed 62 appearances. Not a fleeting cameo, but a genuine chapter.

Now that chapter is closed. At 27, with his confidence restored and his reputation repaired, Sarr steps back onto the market in search of a new club, while Lens are left to confront an uncomfortable question: how many more pieces can they afford to lose?
