Liverpool's Urgent Pursuit of Yan Diomande: No More Waiting

Liverpool’s chase for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande is set to be sharp and decisive, not another long, slow burn.

Twelve months ago they waited out an entire summer for Alexander Isak. This time, the clock is ticking louder.

Salah gone, urgency rising

Mohamed Salah has played his final game for the club. Cody Gakpo has not convinced. For a side built on relentless width and goals from out wide, that is not a problem that can drift into late August.

Victor Munoz has already arrived from Osasuna, a smart addition for the future, but nobody inside Anfield is pretending he changes the equation. Liverpool want a ready-made, top-level winger now. Diomande sits at the top of that list.

Their intent has already been made clear. An opening offer worth €100m was sent to Leipzig and swiftly knocked back. Fabrizio Romano detailed the situation on his channel, outlining how Liverpool had a €100m bid rejected and are preparing to return with more.

Liverpool, he said, are “pushing on the player side”, working hard on salary and contract terms to get Diomande fully on board. The strategy is obvious: win the player first, then try to crack the club.

Leipzig, though, are standing firm. They see keeping Diomande as the smart play: a new contract, a bigger salary, Champions League football in Germany and, next summer, the freedom for the winger to choose his next step from a position of even greater strength.

Inside the rejected bid

The numbers behind Liverpool’s first move have now been sharpened. Ben Jacobs reports that the offer was not the widely reported €90m plus €10m, but €80m plus €20m in add-ons.

The structure matters. It underlines that Liverpool were already willing to push into nine-figure territory, but with performance-related conditions attached. Leipzig’s answer was clear: no.

Jacobs wrote that Liverpool still regard Diomande as a priority target and there is optimism the player wants the move. Paris Saint-Germain are hovering and could also bid, yet the message from Merseyside is that they will not allow this to become another Isak-style saga.

Last summer, they were prepared to wait for the Newcastle striker. The circumstances were complicated, influenced by Newcastle’s own incomings and the knowledge that Isak, at his age and proven Premier League level, justified patience.

This window feels different. There is a gap in the wide areas now, not a hypothetical one in a year’s time. That shifts the entire approach.

No appetite for another long saga

Jacobs is clear: Liverpool do not intend to let the Diomande pursuit drift into August. The first €80m+€20m proposal was dismissed quickly, and the club are now weighing up whether Leipzig are genuinely open to a conversation or simply closing the door.

If Leipzig refuse to engage, Liverpool will not sit and wait.

Alternatives are already lined up. Said El Mala, Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo are among the names under consideration, with Bradley Barcola also appreciated. It is a reminder that this is not a one-player plan, even if Diomande is the preferred option.

Romano has said Liverpool “will be very aggressive” and will return with a bid higher than €100m in an attempt to change Leipzig’s stance. Behind the scenes, the work continues on the player’s side of the deal, fine-tuning a financial package designed to make Diomande’s decision straightforward if and when Leipzig relent.

Leipzig, for now, believe the smartest move is to hold their nerve and keep their winger for at least one more season.

Liverpool, for once, might not be willing to wait and see who blinks first.
