Right now, that belief has slipped.

Liverpool escaped the Champions League group stage last season, but never truly looked like a side ready to go the distance. For a squad of this quality, that is nowhere near enough. The early noise around the campaign had been deafening: Liverpool were tipped to sweep aside almost everything in front of them. Then reality bit. Big names such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz failed to hit the levels expected, the performances sagged, and the sense of inevitability around Anfield evaporated.

Iraola’s first task is to light that fire again.

Real Madrid circle – but not around Mac Allister

Amid all of that, Liverpool have been handed a piece of transfer news that, on the face of it, has nothing to do with them – but could prove crucial.

Real Madrid, the club that so often lurks in the shadows of Liverpool’s transfer plans, has turned its attention to Marcelo Brozovic. According to reporter Sacha Tavolieri, a Real Madrid representative has already contacted the Croatian’s camp to test the waters over a move. Brozovic is a free agent after leaving Al Nassr, and the idea on the table is a one-season deal.

It sounds simple: a short-term fix for a midfield that José Mourinho wants to reshape. But for Liverpool, the implications run deeper.

Real have been a persistent thorn in Liverpool’s side in recent years, not just on the pitch but in the market. They have already taken Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konaté away from Anfield on free transfers, exploiting contract stand-offs and hesitation. Liverpool can only blame themselves for allowing those situations to develop, but the pattern is clear. When the two clubs shop in similar aisles, the Spanish giants rarely hesitate.

That is why this Brozovic move matters.

A stop-gap in Madrid, a lifeline on Merseyside

Alexis Mac Allister has long been on Real Madrid’s radar. His name has floated around their shortlist for what feels like an age. Even now, with sections of the Liverpool support questioning his form and debating whether he should be moved on, he remains one of the few genuine technicians in Iraola’s midfield.

Liverpool’s depth is already fragile. Last season’s campaign was shredded by injuries, exposing just how thin the squad really was when the fixtures piled up. Strip out Mac Allister without a proper replacement and the midfield starts to look alarmingly bare for a club aiming to compete on multiple fronts.

This is where Real Madrid’s interest in Brozovic becomes significant. A one-year deal for the Croatian suggests a different route, a stop-gap solution rather than a major investment in Mac Allister this summer. If Madrid plug their midfield hole with Brozovic, the pressure on Liverpool to fend off a late-window raid for their Argentine playmaker eases, at least for now.

For Iraola, that is no small relief. Mac Allister may not have been at his best last season, but his intelligence, versatility and experience still give Liverpool a platform in games that threaten to drift away from them. He is far more valuable on the pitch than as a name on a sales sheet with no successor lined up.

The danger, of course, has not completely passed. Mourinho’s tastes can change quickly, and a late swing back towards Mac Allister would drag Liverpool into exactly the kind of scramble they can’t afford this close to a new campaign.

For the moment, though, Real Madrid looking at Marcelo Brozovic buys Liverpool something they desperately need as Iraola starts his rebuild: time, stability, and at least one key midfielder still in a red shirt when the season kicks off.
