Liverpool Target Nick Woltemade as Striking Reshuffle Accelerates

Liverpool’s attacking rebuild has taken an intriguing twist, with the club monitoring a loan move for Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade as they scramble to reshape their forward line before the new season.

Mohamed Salah has already walked away on a free, Hugo Ekitike is sidelined long term with a serious achilles injury, and uncertainty lingers over Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa. The spine of Liverpool’s attack, once one of the most feared in Europe, suddenly looks fragile.

The club’s recruitment team has moved quickly. Bradley Barcola is understood to be the primary target, with strong interest also in his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Ibrahim Mbaye. But Liverpool are not just hunting wide forwards. They want cover – and competition – for Alexander Isak as well. That search has led them to an unexpected name.

Liverpool weigh up Woltemade

Liverpool hold an interest in Nick Woltemade, the Newcastle striker who arrived on Tyneside last summer in a blaze of expectation and a club-record deal of around £69 million.

Newcastle beat Bayern Munich to his signature after Liverpool had already raided the market to land Ekitike and pushed hard for Isak in a British-record £125m move. At the time, it felt like a statement signing from the Magpies: a Germany international widely labelled “unstoppable” at his best.

The reality of his first season in England was far more subdued. Woltemade managed 11 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions, a modest return for a fee of that size and the responsibility he carried. Eddie Howe never quite unlocked him, even experimenting with him in midfield as he searched for a solution.

Now Newcastle have told Woltemade he can leave on loan for the coming campaign. That decision has opened the door. Liverpool are one of the clubs tracking the situation closely. There have been no formal talks between the clubs yet, but the interest is real.

For Andoni Iraola and his staff, Woltemade’s appeal lies in his versatility. He can operate as a traditional number nine or drop into the pockets as a number ten, linking play and offering a different dimension around the box. In a squad that may soon lose multiple attacking pieces, that flexibility carries weight.

He is not at the top of Liverpool’s attacking shortlist. Barcola and others remain ahead of him. But once Newcastle signalled a willingness to let him go, Woltemade moved firmly into the “under consideration” category.

A curious fit for Iraola’s blueprint

On pure talent, there is no mystery. Newcastle did not spend £69m by accident. Woltemade’s technical level is high, his touch clean, his awareness sharp. At his best, he can knit moves together and bring others into play in a way few big strikers manage.

The question is whether he fits what Liverpool are trying to become under Iraola.

The new regime wants a front line built on pace, aggression and relentless running. A team that stretches opponents, suffocates them, and strikes quickly when space appears. Woltemade offers something different. He is not the quickest. He is not the most powerful. He does not naturally scream “transition weapon”.

What he does offer is a contrasting profile: a technically gifted forward who can drop off the line, combine in tight spaces and give Liverpool another way to attack low blocks. In theory, that variety has value across a long season.

On paper, though, it still feels like an odd move. Woltemade has yet to prove he can dominate Premier League defences or deliver the kind of instant impact Liverpool need after losing Salah and with so many attacking questions still unanswered.

A loan might lower the risk and make sense from a squad-building perspective. But Liverpool are operating in a window where almost every attacking decision will shape the first phase of Iraola’s era.

Do they gamble on a talented but unconvincing Premier League performer to support Isak? Or do they hold out for a forward who mirrors the pace and punch they are trying to inject across the pitch?

Woltemade is available. Liverpool are watching. The next move will say plenty about how bold – or how pragmatic – they are prepared to be.
