Liverpool's Summer Winger Strategy: Rayan and Barcola

Liverpool are positioning themselves for a summer reshuffle on the wings, with personal terms understood to be agreed “in principle” with Bournemouth’s Brazilian teenager Rayan – if the south-coast club decide to cash in.

The Merseysiders are keeping the move warm in the background while they actively pursue Bradley Barcola from PSG, as the recruitment team weighs up how best to refresh the wide areas without the kind of lavish outlay seen last year.

Rayan on standby as market tightens

A well-regarded source on X has urged Liverpool supporters to monitor the Rayan situation closely, and with good reason. At 19, the right-sided winger has already made a sharp impression in the Premier League, producing seven goal contributions – five goals and two assists – in just 15 appearances during his first half-season in England.

He did that in a campaign that proved unusually hostile to wide forwards. The league tilted towards greater physicality, more direct play and a growing emphasis on set-pieces, a mix that often left traditional wingers isolated and frustrated. Rayan cut through that noise, showing enough pace, power and end product to catch the eye of top scouts.

He is not, though, the most advanced wide prospect on Liverpool’s radar. Inside the club, there is an acknowledgment that a player like Yan Diomande, after a full year of development in Germany, currently looks the more polished option. Diomande’s expected move to Real Madrid, however, underlines the reality of this market: the most coveted wide talents are disappearing fast.

PSG, for their part, are moving on Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche, another name admired across Europe. As those dominoes fall, Liverpool’s list of realistic alternatives shrinks. If they miss out on both Rayan and Barcola, the conversation quickly drops down a tier to the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Matias Fernandez-Pardo – players with promise, but not the same immediate impact profile.

One marquee winger, not two

Inside Anfield, nobody is seriously talking about a double swoop for Rayan and Barcola. The admiration is there, but the finances are not. Liverpool spent heavily last summer, landing record-breaking deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in the same window. That level of investment is not expected to be repeated in the current market.

The club’s hierarchy is working under a tighter budget, conscious not only of balancing the books but also of the need to strengthen other areas of the squad. Andoni Iraola still requires reinforcements across the pitch ahead of the 2026/27 season; the winger search is just one piece of a broader rebuild.

Within that context, Barcola is believed to be at the forefront of Richard Hughes’ planning. The Frenchman represents the primary target, the headline move Liverpool would like to complete if negotiations with PSG break the right way. Rayan sits just behind that, a deal effectively prepared in case the Barcola pursuit stalls or collapses.

Liverpool’s strategy is clear: one major wide signing, chosen carefully, rather than a scattergun dash for multiple forwards. Whether that player ends up being Barcola, Rayan, or someone else entirely will say plenty about how boldly the club intends to attack the next phase of this squad’s evolution.
