Liverpool Signs Belgian Goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans in £30m Deal from Genk
Liverpool have secured the signature of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Belgian club Genk for a fee of £30 million. The towering 6ft 7in teenager has committed to a long-term contract at Anfield, keeping him with the Reds until 2032.
A Strategic Move for the Future of Goalkeeping
The club acted swiftly to bring in one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers, fending off competition from other clubs. Brughmans has made a mark this season by starting all four of Genk’s league matches, showcasing his potential as a future international star. He has already represented Belgium at various youth levels, and this transfer represents a major step forward in his career.
Transfer Details and Loan Agreement
The deal includes a £30 million package that is heavily weighted with performance-related add-ons. This structure allows Liverpool to manage their financial risk while rewarding Genk if Brughmans reaches certain milestones.
After signing, Brughmans will spend the 2026-27 season back on loan at Genk. This loan period is designed to give him consistent first-team experience and exposure to European competitions before he joins Liverpool's squad in the summer of 2027.
Planning Beyond Alisson's Tenure
This signing comes amid questions over the future of current first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, whose contract expires next summer. Alongside existing options Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, and Vitezslav Jaros, Brughmans adds depth and long-term security to Liverpool’s goalkeeping department.
Continuing a Youth-Focused Recruitment Strategy
Liverpool has shown commitment to bringing in young talent globally. Earlier this year, they signed Senegalese defender Mor Talla Ndiaye and Austrian centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe, both standout performers at the U17 World Cup in Qatar. Hungarian goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, currently on loan at TSV Hartberg, and Colombian midfielder Samuel Martinez are also part of this youth-driven approach.
