Liverpool Sign Víctor Muñoz as Iraola Era Begins

Liverpool have wasted no time arming Andoni Iraola with a player in his own image. Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz is set to become the first signing of the new head coach’s reign after the club activated his £34.5m release clause, edging out Newcastle and a clutch of European rivals to land one of Spain’s quickest risers.

The 22-year-old will sign a six-year contract once he completes a medical in Atlanta on Wednesday, where he is currently on World Cup duty with Spain. Liverpool have tracked him for a long time, but Iraola’s arrival turned interest into urgency. The Basque coach wanted his compatriot; the club moved to make it happen.

Iraola, who built his playing career at Athletic Bilbao and has never taken his eye off La Liga, has been struck by Muñoz’s development at Osasuna. The winger’s acceleration, direct running and relentlessness out of possession fit neatly with the high-intensity blueprint that defined Iraola’s work in Spain and England.

Liverpool were not alone. Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen both explored a move, while Barcelona and Real Madrid – clubs where Muñoz came through at youth level – had him on their lists earlier in the summer before choosing to prioritise other targets. In the end, Liverpool’s conviction and the clarity of Iraola’s role for him proved decisive.

Muñoz arrives as a modern attacker rather than a fixed-position winger. He can operate on either flank and through the middle as a central striker, a level of flexibility Liverpool see as crucial as they reshape the squad for a new cycle. Speed is the thread running through their plans: a core part of this summer’s strategy is to inject more pace across the front line, and Muñoz ticks that box emphatically.

His rise with Spain has been sharp. He made his international debut in March and scored against Serbia, underlining his threat in the final third. He stayed on the bench for the draw with Cape Verde, but his inclusion in the World Cup squad at 22 underlines how quickly his stock has climbed.

One thing his arrival will not do is automatically close the door on Federico Chiesa. The Italian, on the fringes under Arne Slot, could find a more natural home in Iraola’s more vertical, transition-heavy system. The question is whether Chiesa has the patience to wait for that to play out. He wants more minutes, and he is open to leaving if they are not guaranteed.

For now, though, the spotlight falls on Muñoz. Liverpool have paid the clause, backed their new head coach, and brought in a forward built for speed and versatility. The first piece of the Iraola rebuild is in place. How many more will follow before the season kicks off?
