Liverpool’s Recruitment Setback: Eichhorn Chooses Leverkusen

Liverpool’s recruitment team thought they were closing in. The data was done, the pitch was polished, the pathway to the first team laid out. A modest release clause sat there waiting to be triggered.

And then Kennet Eichhorn said no.

Liverpool’s “significant progress” hits a wall

Liverpool have been beaten to one of Germany’s brightest teenage prospects, with 16-year-old Hertha Berlin midfielder Kennet Eichhorn rejecting a Premier League move to join Bayer Leverkusen instead.

The Reds had pushed hard. Throughout May and June, they worked on a deal for the Germany youth international, encouraged by a release clause in the €8m–€9m bracket that left Hertha powerless once a buyer stepped up. Internally, Liverpool believed they had made what were described as “significant progress” in convincing the player and his camp that Anfield was the right next step.

They were not alone. Manchester City and Chelsea also circled, sensing an opportunity to steal a march on a player already blooded in Hertha’s first team and viewed as one of the most accomplished defensive midfielders of his age group in Germany.

The Premier League giants, though, have all been given the same answer.

Graeme Bailey revealed on Wednesday that Liverpool, City and Chelsea have been informed Eichhorn will not be moving to England this summer, despite Liverpool’s growing confidence that their track record with young players could tilt the decision their way.

The pressure they applied never broke the door down.

Leverkusen strike under the radar

While England’s elite were busy plotting, Bayer Leverkusen moved with quiet precision.

Bayer, along with RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, had been in the race, but the expectation in many quarters was that the financial and branding power of the Premier League, or even Dortmund’s reputation with youngsters, would ultimately decide it.

Instead, Leverkusen’s hierarchy went to work in the background.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Eichhorn has now given his “final green light” to the Bundesliga champions. The teenager will join from Hertha via that €8m–€9m release clause, with a contract running until 2031 and a medical to follow. Rejections, Plettenberg reported, have been sent to every other club involved. The saga, as he put it, is over.

David Ornstein described the agreement as a “significant coup” for Leverkusen, and it is hard to argue. Eichhorn was being chased by top clubs in both Germany and England, yet chose to stay in the Bundesliga with Xabi Alonso’s side, fresh from their 2024 title win.

This was no opportunistic grab. Ornstein detailed how Leverkusen’s pursuit was led by managing director Simon Rolfes and director of football Kim Falkenberg, the pair operating largely out of the spotlight while others made more noise. They will now activate the release clause, allowing the Germany youth international to travel, complete his medical and sign as the paperwork is finalised.

Few tipped Leverkusen to win this race. They have.

What it means for Liverpool

For Liverpool, this is a rare defeat in a market they pride themselves on reading early. The club saw Eichhorn as one for the future, a long-term investment to sit beneath the headline signings planned to help Andoni Iraola compete for major honours from his first season in charge.

They had leaned on their reputation for developing young talent, pointed to clear pathways from academy to first team, and believed that combination would be enough. It wasn’t.

Instead, Eichhorn will grow in the system of the reigning Bundesliga champions, under a club that has just shown it can blend youth with elite performance at the very top level.

Liverpool will move on to other targets. The question is whether this particular near-miss comes back to haunt them in the years ahead.
