Liverpool Approached for Raul Asencio but Defender Stays at Madrid

Liverpool have been quietly approached over a move for Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio, but the Spanish international is refusing to loosen his grip on life at the Bernabeu.

Intermediaries have tested the water with Liverpool, aware of the club’s long-standing admiration for the 23-year-old and their intent to add another defender this summer. When Asencio’s potential availability was raised, Liverpool listened. The idea interested them.

Then came the snag.

Real Madrid are prepared to let Asencio go. Those close to the situation are adamant he is not. The centre-back, who can also operate at right-back, remains determined to fight for his place and is not ready to walk away from the European giants he believes he can still impress.

A sweeping defensive overhaul – including the signings of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries – has cranked up the competition and left Mourinho ready to sanction an exit if the right proposal lands on the table.

The message from Madrid is simple: you can go if you want to. The message from Asencio is just as clear: not yet.

Iraola’s admiration meets a closed door

On Merseyside, the interest is real. Andoni Iraola is understood to be a long-time admirer of Asencio and values exactly what makes him so appealing to modern coaches – his ability to cover both central defence and right-back with authority.

That kind of flexibility matters at Anfield. Liverpool’s recent seasons have been scarred by defensive injuries and reshuffles, forcing makeshift back fours and exposing the lack of reliable, multi-role cover. A 23-year-old Spain international comfortable in two positions ticks a lot of boxes.

So when Asencio’s camp made contact, Liverpool did not brush it off. They monitored. They asked questions. They stayed open to the possibility.

But there is no live negotiation. No advanced talks. No sense that a deal is close.

The standstill comes down to the player’s stance. As long as Asencio believes he can carve out a future at the Bernabeu, Liverpool’s interest remains just that – interest, not action. Real Madrid may be ready to move him on, but without the defender’s consent, nothing moves.

If the reality of Mourinho’s plans eventually bites and Asencio accepts he sits outside the long-term picture in Madrid, Liverpool are expected to be back in the frame, ready to pounce. Until he changes his mind, though, a switch to Anfield sits on ice, an attractive idea trapped behind a closed door.
