Liverpool's Pursuit of Yan Diomande: A Swing at Shadows

Liverpool have thrown one last punch in the Yan Diomande saga – but all the noise from Germany and Paris says the same thing: they’re swinging at shadows.

The 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger, installed as Liverpool’s primary wide target at the start of the summer, has chosen PSG. Internally at Leipzig, that decision is already being treated as a reality rather than a possibility.

Salah’s shadow and Liverpool’s big swing

Mohamed Salah’s exit ripped a hole through Liverpool’s right flank, both tactically and emotionally. The club moved quickly, elevating Diomande to the top of their shortlist, convinced his ability to operate from the right of the front line made him the natural heir.

They backed that conviction with money. Real money.

An official offer worth €100m (£85m) went in to Leipzig and was rejected. The structure of the bid varies depending on the source – either €90m plus €10m in add-ons, or €80m plus €20m – but the headline figure is not in dispute. Liverpool put €100m on the table and were sent away.

The rejection hurt, but the real blow came when Diomande indicated he wanted PSG. At that point, Liverpool’s pursuit looked cooked.

PSG step on the gas

Just when Liverpool hoped uncertainty in Paris might reopen the door, PSG doubled down.

Reports that the French champions might cool their interest have been dismissed. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has stepped in personally to lead negotiations with Leipzig, a move that has shifted the talks up a gear.

His relationship with Red Bull’s hierarchy is understood to be a key factor. Once Al-Khelaifi got involved, discussions accelerated and Leipzig began to accept the inevitable: Diomande is on his way to Paris.

Sources close to the talks believe a club-to-club agreement is now close. PSG are ready to pay around €110m (£93.5m) to close the deal, a figure that goes beyond Liverpool’s failed bid and underlines just how determined the European champions are to land the Ivorian.

Late calls, same answer

Liverpool are not alone in trying to change Diomande’s mind. Arsenal and Manchester City have also made late approaches, sensing even a sliver of doubt could turn the deal on its head.

It has not.

Of the three, Liverpool have pushed hardest. He is their top target, the one they have already tested Leipzig’s resolve for with a nine-figure offer. Yet the message coming back is consistent: Diomande wants PSG, and PSG are acting like a club that knows it.

Leipzig, for their part, are now “increasingly resigned” to losing him. The direction of travel is clear.

Barcola back in focus

With Diomande slipping away, Liverpool’s recruitment team are being dragged back to a familiar name: Bradley Barcola.

The PSG winger could become collateral damage in Diomande’s arrival. Barcola and PSG are at an impasse over a new and improved contract, and the club are open to a sale at the right price. For Liverpool, who have already sounded out the possibility, the situation is too tempting to ignore.

FSG have been preparing for this scenario. Once it became obvious Diomande’s heart was set on Paris, Liverpool intensified their interest in Barcola, seeing an opportunity to exploit the knock-on effect of PSG’s pursuit.

Diomande remains the one that got away – the “true prize,” as those close to Liverpool’s plans describe him. But the market rarely waits for regret.

If PSG complete the €110m deal and push Barcola towards the exit, Liverpool’s response will define their summer: do they pivot cleanly and aggressively, or keep chasing a lost cause while the right flank stays empty?
