Liverpool Pursue Yan Diomande as Leipzig Rejects Initial Bid

Leipzig say no, Liverpool reload

Liverpool have already tested Leipzig’s resolve with an opening package worth €100m (£87m, $116m). It went straight back with a firm rejection. No counter, no guidance, no softening of the stance.

From Germany, the message is blunt. Philipp Hinze of Sky Germany reports that Leipzig turned down the €100m offer without naming an asking price, and that internally the club want to keep Diomande for at least one more season. Only a proposal “significantly above €100m” is viewed as capable of shifting that position.

Inside Leipzig, the logic is clear: no release clause, a rising market value, a 19-year-old tied to a long-term contract. He is not officially “untouchable”, but the valuation reflects how close he is to that status. The club are already speaking to his camp about a pay rise and a revised deal to match his growing importance.

Yet Liverpool are not walking away. Far from it. Fenway Sports Group are preparing a second, heavier bid, expected to land on Leipzig’s desk this week. And this time, it will go beyond the €100m barrier.

The hidden battle: winning over Diomande

The public story has been about numbers. How high Liverpool will go. How stubborn Leipzig will be. But away from the headlines, the real contest is being fought over the player himself.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking on the Blood N Red podcast, underlined that point. He believes the “player side” of this saga has been underrated, and that Liverpool have been doing “excellent work” behind the scenes to get Diomande to push for the move and tell Leipzig he wants Anfield.

That quiet campaign has been running for months. Back in December, Liverpool officials were in almost daily contact with Diomande’s entourage, laying the groundwork for a summer switch. Those efforts have not stopped. If anything, they’ve intensified as the scale of Leipzig’s resistance has become clear.

Romano says Liverpool are “trying their best in terms of a financial proposal” to get Diomande fully on board, convinced that his buy-in could prove decisive if the situation reaches a breaking point. The club’s confidence, he suggests, stems from that relationship-building as much as from their willingness to raise the bid.

PSG step back, door opens wider

The landscape around Diomande has shifted in Liverpool’s favour. Reports in the last 24 hours indicate that PSG, previously seen as serious rivals for his signature, have stepped away from the race due to concerns over the escalating fee.

With PSG out, Liverpool are effectively left alone at the front of the queue. That does not mean Leipzig will suddenly fold, but it does remove the threat of a bidding war and leaves the German side dealing with one determined, well-prepared buyer rather than two.

Leipzig, for their part, have a clear counter-strategy. Romano reports that they see keeping Diomande, rewarding him with a big salary and a new contract, and offering him Champions League football for another year as a “smart decision” – with the idea that he could then decide his future next summer from an even stronger position.

Liverpool intend to disrupt that plan. Romano is adamant: they “will be very aggressive” and “will bid more than €100m” in an effort to change the dynamic.

Backup plans and a potential domino at Anfield

No elite recruitment department pins an entire summer on one player, however gifted. While Liverpool push hard for Diomande, they are also keeping parallel options warm.

One of those is PSG winger Bradley Barcola, a player Romano says Liverpool “love”. The Frenchman would represent a different profile and pathway to the Salah succession, but the interest is real and monitored carefully as the Diomande saga drags on.

What seems certain is that if Liverpool land either Diomande or Barcola, something significant will have to give in their current forward line. A major arrival in a wide attacking role would almost inevitably trigger a high-profile exit.

Tottenham Hotspur are already positioning themselves to take advantage. Spurs are prepared to put a big-money, five-year deal on the table for a Liverpool attacker, sensing that the reshaping of the Anfield front line could open a rare window of opportunity.
