Liverpool's Ambitious Move for £145m Barcola Amidst PSG Standoff

Liverpool have opened the door to one of the most ambitious moves of the summer – but Paris Saint-Germain are standing firmly in the way.

Preliminary talks have taken place between the clubs over Bradley Barcola, yet the early exchanges have exposed a huge gap in valuation. The Champions League holders are said to want around £145m for the 23-year-old. Liverpool are nowhere near that figure.

At that price, it is not a negotiation. It is a blockade.

PSG’s stance makes any deal complicated for now, but Liverpool have not walked away. Discussions have also been held with Barcola’s representatives, and the player is understood to be attracted by the prospect of moving to Anfield. Two years left on his contract, no intention of signing a new one, and frustration at a lack of game time in Paris: the ingredients are there for a standoff.

Five-winger plan after Salah exit

Mohamed Salah has gone, and with him a decade-defining presence on Liverpool’s right. Iraola wants to reshape the attack around numbers, variety and relentlessness in the wide areas. Liverpool’s plan is clear: finish this window with five wingers, one of them a younger talent to develop alongside more established options.

That is where Ibrahim Mbaye enters the picture.

The Reds have explored the conditions of a deal for the 18-year-old PSG winger, who predominantly operates from the right and is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield. Crucially, Liverpool view their interest in Mbaye as completely separate from any pursuit of Barcola. This is not an either-or scenario. It is entirely possible they sign Mbaye and still bring in a more experienced wide player.

Iraola’s previous teams at Bournemouth and Rayo Vallecano lived off the pace, energy and work-rate of their wingers. They pressed high, ran hard and stretched games to breaking point. Drop that template onto Liverpool, and Barcola suddenly looks like a central piece of the puzzle rather than a luxury addition.

Barcola’s pedigree, PSG’s problem

Barcola’s CV is staggering for a player of his age. Nine major trophies in the last two years, including two Champions League titles, underline the level Liverpool are targeting. Bought from Lyon for around £40m in the summer of 2023, he has climbed quickly into the elite bracket of wide forwards.

That rise explains PSG’s price. It does not make it any easier to swallow.

The key to any movement now is simple: will PSG blink on the fee? Until they soften their stance, Liverpool are effectively staring at a locked door, aware that the player likes the idea of Merseyside but unable to reach him.

Arsenal are watching too. After missing out on Vinicius Junior when he extended his deal at Real Madrid, they also hold an interest in Barcola. Another heavyweight in the queue only strengthens PSG’s hand, even if the French champions insist they would ideally keep him.

Akliouche in, but door still closed

On Thursday, PSG added another winger, Magnes Akliouche, in a £42.8m move from Monaco. Liverpool had tracked the France international, but once PSG arrived, Akliouche’s mind was made up. A Paris-born talent, going home to the capital’s superclub was always going to be a powerful pull.

PSG are also in advanced talks with Ajax over winger Mika Godts. On paper, that looks like a clear sign of a changing forward line. Three attacking signings in a short window, three forwards already moved on this summer in Goncalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-In Lee – the kind of churn that usually precedes a big exit.

Yet inside PSG, the message is different. Akliouche and Godts are not being treated as replacements for Barcola. They are additions, not cover for a departure. The club would prefer to keep him, even as his contract ticks down and his minutes remain a point of tension.

So the situation hangs in the balance. Liverpool want five wingers. Barcola wants more football. PSG want £145m and, publicly at least, want their man to stay.

Something will have to give. The only question is who blinks first.
