Liverpool's Last-Minute Loan Attempt for Chelsea's Malo Gusto Falls Through

On transfer deadline day, Liverpool tried to secure a loan move for Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto, but the deal collapsed as both Premier League clubs could not agree on financial terms. The Merseyside side aimed to strengthen their defensive options by adding the 23-year-old defender temporarily, but Chelsea insisted on a permanent transfer, which Liverpool were unwilling to accept.

Deadline Day Negotiations Break Down

Journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported that Liverpool made a last-minute push to bring Gusto on loan. They wanted him to join coach Andoni Iraola’s squad to boost competition at right-back. The negotiations, however, hit a wall because Liverpool only wanted a straight loan without any obligation to buy after the season, while Chelsea wanted a permanent sale.

Throughout the summer, Liverpool had a relatively quiet transfer window but managed to sign Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, Ronald Araujo, and Bradley Barcola before the deadline.

Chelsea Demands Permanent Transfer

Chelsea refused to agree to a temporary move. Earlier in the summer, when Manchester City showed interest, the Blues valued Gusto at around £75 million. Liverpool found it difficult to commit to such a costly permanent transfer given their financial priorities elsewhere.

The disagreement over the nature of the deal meant no agreement was reached. Chelsea made it clear they would only allow Gusto to leave if there was a significant long-term financial commitment from the purchasing club.

Xabi Alonso Backs Gusto

With the transfer falling apart, Gusto will stay at Stamford Bridge. Manager Xabi Alonso has shown trust in the young defender, starting him in recent Premier League wins against Fulham and Brighton, as well as in the Carabao Cup victory over Luton. Gusto’s athleticism suits Alonso’s tactics well, and he is expected to start again as Chelsea face Arsenal in their upcoming Premier League match.

What Lies Ahead for Liverpool?

Since the move didn't happen, Liverpool will rely on their current defensive squad. Coach Iraola will count on Jeremie Frimpong as his primary right-back. The manager will also hope for a speedy recovery from Conor Bradley, who suffered a knee injury in January, especially as fixtures pile up with both domestic league and European games.
