Liverpool's Winger Dilemma: Klopp's Influence on Diomande

Jurgen Klopp has barely left Anfield and already he is standing in Liverpool’s way.

Not on the touchline this time, but in a boardroom hundreds of miles away, as head of global soccer for the Red Bull group. From that vantage point, the former Liverpool manager is now a key figure in the saga surrounding one of the club’s prime summer targets: RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.

Liverpool’s rebuild meets a familiar face

Liverpool are braced for a summer of change. Mohamed Salah is expected to depart. Andy Robertson too. The farewell at the weekend will be emotional, and symbolic: a great era edging towards its conclusion.

Inside the club, the reaction has been clear. No more experience will be allowed to walk out the door if it can be helped. Alisson, courted from abroad, is now set to stay for at least another season. Stability in goal; upheaval on the flanks.

Finding at least one new winger sits near the top of Liverpool’s to-do list. Cody Gakpo’s inconsistency and Salah’s looming exit have pushed wide attacking reinforcements from “nice to have” to “urgent”. In that context, Yan Diomande’s name has moved rapidly up the shortlist.

The Ivory Coast international has become one of the most talked-about young wide players in Europe. Explosive, direct, and already a key figure at Leipzig, he fits the profile Liverpool crave: young, high ceiling, and capable of growing into a starring role.

Klopp’s new job, Liverpool’s new problem

There is a twist. According to Football Transfers, Liverpool’s plans “promise to be thwarted” by Klopp himself.

Now overseeing the Red Bull football empire, Klopp is involved in transfer strategy across the group, including at Leipzig. The Bundesliga club have taken a firm stance: Diomande will not be leaving this summer.

The Daily Mirror report that Leipzig are “adamant” the winger is “going nowhere this summer” despite Liverpool placing him “near the top of their wish-list”. Champions League qualification has only strengthened that resolve. With elite European football secured, Leipzig’s hierarchy feel no pressure to sell.

Paris Saint-Germain are circling as well. That has only hardened Leipzig’s position. The report suggests club chiefs are ready to bat away big-money offers, aware they hold one of the market’s most coveted teenagers. Their stance could obstruct Liverpool’s pursuit and complicate the wider winger market, including PSG’s Bradley Barcola, who is also being tracked by Arsenal.

The message from Leipzig is blunt: they are in control.

€100m question hangs over Diomande

Behind the scenes, the story is more nuanced. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that both Liverpool and PSG are “pushing” for Diomande and that Leipzig have placed an eye-watering price on his head: around €100m (£86m), and potentially more depending on the offers.

“Diomande is absolutely on the shortlist, and near the top of the shortlist, for both Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. Talks are ongoing, with the player weighing up his options and speaking with his agents and the interested clubs about project, contract, development, and manager.

Nothing is close yet. No agreement, no green light. Just pressure building from two giants and a young star assessing which path could define his career.

Leipzig, for their part, have not simply dug in and shut the door. They have put a proposal on the table: stay one more season, extend his contract, receive a pay rise, and include a release clause that would structure a future exit on their terms. It is a classic Red Bull move—control the timing, control the fee.

Romano insists that, despite that offer, Diomande is still seriously considering leaving this summer. If he decides to push for a move, negotiations will be essential. Leipzig want around €100m, possibly more, and they know there are at least two clubs willing to test their resolve.

Liverpool want him. PSG want him. Leipzig call the shots.

The dynamic is stark. Liverpool need a winger. PSG need a winger. Diomande is one of the standout options on the market. And Klopp’s new employers have the leverage.

For Liverpool, this is a test of how far they are willing to go in the first major window of their post-Klopp era. Spend close to nine figures on a teenager? Walk away and pivot to a cheaper target? Or wait a year and risk losing him to Paris or elsewhere?

Klopp once built a Liverpool side that terrified Europe with its wide forwards. Now, from his new perch within the Red Bull structure, he could be the man who keeps one of Europe’s brightest young wingers out of Anfield.

Liverpool want him. PSG want him. Leipzig will dictate the conditions. The only question left is whether someone pays the price to break their grip.
