Liverpool Nears Major Investment Deal with Jeff Bezos Consortium

Liverpool are edging towards one of the most powerful investment tie-ups in world sport, with a heavyweight consortium featuring Jeff Bezos advancing talks over a deal for around 30% of the club.

The group is fronted by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, with Amazon founder Bezos the headline name in a line-up of serious financial clout. BBC Sport has been told discussions have moved forward as Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), explore what they have termed a “strategic minority investment”.

This is not a full sale. FSG stay in charge. But the numbers, and the names, underline the scale of what is on the table.

Bhatia, long regarded as a shrewd operator in football circles, only stepped away from Queens Park Rangers last month after 18 years as director and co-owner. The 44-year-old is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and his move away from Loftus Road now looks less like an exit and more like a repositioning.

He has re-emerged at the very top of the market.

Bezos’ presence lifts the potential deal into a different stratosphere. The American, founder of e-commerce giant Amazon and the fourth-richest person on the planet, has an estimated net worth of $256bn (£192bn), according to Forbes. When someone with that kind of fortune circles a club of Liverpool’s stature, the rest of the sport pays attention.

FSG confirmed last month that Bhatia’s consortium had formally expressed interest in taking a minority stake. The talks have not been rushed into the public domain, but the calibre of the investors ensures every step is scrutinised.

For Liverpool, the prospect is clear: fresh capital without surrendering control. For the consortium, it offers a foothold in one of football’s most globally recognised institutions, with a fanbase and brand reach that few clubs can match.

No figures beyond the approximate 30% stake have been disclosed, and no timeline has been made public. Yet the direction of travel is obvious. As elite clubs chase new revenue streams and deeper global influence, Liverpool may soon find themselves backed not only by FSG’s experience, but by a group whose combined wealth belongs to an entirely different league.

If the deal lands, Anfield will not just be a stage for Europe’s best players. It will become a focal point for some of the world’s most powerful money.
