Liverpool to Honor Kevin Keegan with Tributes

Anfield is preparing to say goodbye to one of its greats.

Liverpool have confirmed a series of tributes to club legend Kevin Keegan, who died last month at the age of 75, with the new season set to open under the shadow of his passing and the glow of his legacy.

Keegan arrived from Scunthorpe United in 1971 and helped drag Liverpool into a new era. Across six relentless, glittering years, he won three league titles, the European Cup, two Uefa Cups and the FA Cup, becoming the beating heart of a side that came to define English dominance in Europe.

Joint tributes with Newcastle

Liverpool confirmed they are in talks with Newcastle United over “special tributes” ahead of their Premier League opener on 23 August.

It is a fitting collaboration. Keegan is an icon on Tyneside as well as on Merseyside, and the meeting of the two clubs offers a powerful stage for a shared farewell. Details are still to be confirmed, but the tone is clear: two of his great footballing homes, united in remembrance on the first day of the league campaign.

Anfield’s first home farewell

The first league game at Anfield this season, against Nottingham Forest on 29 August, will carry an even more intimate weight.

Liverpool have announced that players will wear black armbands, a minute’s silence will be held, and a “special fan mosaic” will rise from the stands. Anfield has long turned mosaics into art and memory; this one will belong to Keegan.

That afternoon will not be about nostalgia alone. It will be about a club acknowledging that much of what came after him – the trophies, the culture, the expectation of success – rests on foundations he helped lay.

Monaco friendly to set the tone

The tributes begin earlier, though.

When Liverpool host AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly on 9 August, the matchday programme will carry a “commemorative front cover” dedicated to Keegan’s life and career on Merseyside. Inside, the story of his time at the club will frame a game that, in football terms, means little, but emotionally will mark the first collective act of remembrance at Anfield.

As it is the club’s first home fixture since his death, Liverpool will observe a period of applause before kick-off. Special tributes to Keegan will play out on the big screens, and the players will again wear black armbands.
