Liverpool Fans Demand Clarity on Jeff Bezos-Linked Investment Deal
The Liverpool fan group Spirit of Shankly has called on Fenway Sports Group to explain details after reports linked Amazon founder Jeff Bezos with a potential significant minority investment in the club. The group wants urgent clarification about what a proposed 30% stake sale means for Liverpool's ownership and future control.
Spirit of Shankly Seeks Meeting to Discuss Impact
Following widespread news that Bezos is part of a consortium nearing a sizeable minority share, the supporters group officially requested an immediate meeting with club officials. Their aim is to understand how this potential change might affect football operations at Anfield and what influence new investors would hold.
"Given the events that led to FSG’s purchase of the club, who owns it and how they control it—putting the interests of LFC and its supporters first—is fundamental to us all," stated Spirit of Shankly."The latest report of a 30% sale and the consortium set up to buy it is significant. Ownership and custodianship of our club is paramount to SoS and all supporters.""We have seen similar sales at other clubs cause major shifts in management and football decisions, which many fans would not want to see happen at Liverpool."
Consortium Wealthy but Mostly New to Sports Ownership
Bezos holds an estimated personal fortune around £210 billion and owns companies like The Washington Post and Blue Origin. Despite being the world’s third richest individual, he has no prior history of investing in sports teams, although he has been linked to NFL franchises in the past.
The investment group also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, with leadership from Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bhatia is the only member with experience in sports, having recently left his role as co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers after 18 years.
FSG Remains Open to Investment, Fans Await Details
Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s parent company, has welcomed external investment before. Since acquiring the club in 2010 for £300 million, its value has surged to roughly £4.5 billion. Last month, FSG confirmed interest from the Bhatia-led consortium in making a strategic minority investment.
Supporters now await official communication about possible boardroom representation and the extent of influence before any deal is finalized.
