Liverpool Eye Djed Spence Transfer Amid Defensive Concerns
Liverpool are weighing up a move for Tottenham’s restless full-back Djed Spence, with the defender described as “extremely receptive” to a switch to Anfield and Spurs ready to cash in if their price is met.
Two clubs, two very different summers. Tottenham have already rolled through six signings and are still hunting more firepower in the final third. Liverpool, by contrast, have added just two players, one of whom – Jeremy Jacquet – was effectively in the building months ago after a pre-agreement earlier in the year.
Yet it is Liverpool, not Spurs, who suddenly look light where it matters most for Andoni Iraola: at the back.
Liverpool’s defensive alarm bells
Right-back has become a problem position before a competitive ball has even been kicked. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are both ruled out for the start of the season, while Joe Gomez has already suffered a muscle injury in pre-season. Depth has thinned quickly, and Iraola has not hidden his concern.
In late July, TEAMtalk reported that the new Liverpool head coach had asked FSG for defensive reinforcements. The request has now sharpened into a clear line of interest: Spence, Tottenham’s ultra-versatile full-back, is firmly on the radar.
AnfieldIndex had already flagged the 25-year-old as a player admired inside Liverpool. Now, according to Anfield Sector, the admiration is mutual.
Spence ‘would jump at’ Anfield chance
“Liverpool have an interest in Tottenham defender Djed Spence,” Anfield Sector posted on X, adding that Spence is “extremely receptive” to the idea of a move to Merseyside.
The message was clear. If Liverpool come calling, Spence is ready.
Anfield Sector also underlined Iraola’s “defensive concerns around the current right-backs,” while stressing that Spence is not the only name on the list. Liverpool are assessing several options, and there is no guarantee this particular pursuit will accelerate. The interest, though, is described as “definite,” even if it is being played down publicly.
Their update was sourced in tandem with X account @szyexcl, a handle that has built a reputation among Tottenham supporters for being plugged into the club’s transfer movements. The account echoed the same line: Liverpool hold an interest, the player would be “very open” to the move, and Spurs have set their stall out on the fee.
Spurs set £35m-plus price
Tottenham, for all their own transfer bustle, are not in the mood to hand Liverpool a bargain. According to @szyexcl, the north London club would demand at least £35m to sign off on Spence’s departure.
That figure instantly changes the complexion of the deal. For Liverpool, it moves Spence from opportunistic pick-up to significant investment, the kind that usually comes with an expectation of starting minutes rather than squad depth.
Tottenham, meanwhile, are already plotting further attacking signings. Savinho is the headline target for the right wing, while a left winger or centre-forward is also on the agenda. Outgoings will help fuel that push, and Spence now sits in the group of players who could generate a sizeable fee.
A window full of moving parts
The Spence story does not exist in isolation. Spurs are also tracking Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, who could be allowed to leave Anfield if the club secure a direct replacement in attack. Liverpool, for their part, are pushing hard for Bradley Barcola and have explored a move for his PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye.
Every move nudges another piece on the board. If Liverpool land Barcola, Gakpo’s future comes into sharper focus. If Spurs free up funds through sales such as Spence, their own attacking rebuild gathers speed.
For now, Liverpool’s stance on Spence is one of watchful intent rather than all-out pursuit. The player wants it. Tottenham have named their price. Iraola needs a defender.
The question is simple: will Liverpool pay starter’s money for a solution they badly need, or look elsewhere while the clock ticks on a window that already feels behind schedule at Anfield?
