Liverpool's Shift: From Diomande to Pulisic

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande is slipping away, and with it, their primary attacking target of the summer. But as one door edges shut, a familiar name has been pushed firmly into the frame by a club legend: Christian Pulisic.

Diomande Drifts Toward Paris

Liverpool knew they were swinging big for Diomande. An offer worth $113.9 million — $91.1m up front with $22.8m in add-ons — underlined how heavily they rated the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger, currently starring for Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup.

It wasn’t enough.

Leipzig rejected the bid, and the landscape has shifted quickly. Diomande is now understood to have agreed a five-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning European champions, leaving Liverpool watching from the outside as PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi holds direct talks with the Bundesliga club. Confidence in Paris is high that the deal will be completed.

For Liverpool, a marquee target is all but gone.

Backup List Already in Motion

The club has not been caught cold. Contingency plans are already in place, with four names identified as possible alternatives: Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, Cologne’s Said El Mala, Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, according to previous reporting from The Athletic.

All fit the Liverpool profile: young, energetic, with upside to develop under elite coaching. All would come with varying degrees of risk and adaptation time.

Yet Robbie Fowler has looked at the same picture and drawn a different conclusion.

Fowler’s Call: “What About Pulisic?”

Fowler, never shy of an opinion when it comes to Liverpool’s forward line, took to X to highlight a glaring omission from the rumour mill.

“Plenty of rumours about as to who's going to @LFC. One name I've not seen mentioned is Pulisic,” he wrote. “Good age, played in the Prem, exciting player, I'd take him, potentially a Salah type of pathway, thoughts?”

It was a pointed intervention. In a market dominated by emerging talents, Fowler is arguing for a player who already knows the Premier League, already knows the scrutiny, and is in the peak years of his career.

A World Cup Shop Window

Pulisic is in the shop window at the perfect time. The 27-year-old is leading the United States at a home World Cup, featuring in two of three group games as Mauricio Pochettino’s side topped Group D to reach the knockouts.

At club level, he has rebuilt his reputation at AC Milan. After an uneven four-year spell at Chelsea — 98 Premier League appearances, 20 goals — he has re-established himself in Serie A as one of the league’s standout attackers.

His 2025/26 numbers tell a solid, if not spectacular, story: 10 goals and 4 assists. Diomande’s output is heavier at 13 goals and 10 assists, but the American brings something different: experience at the highest level, tactical flexibility, and a proven ability to handle big stages.

The talent has never been in doubt. The question is whether Liverpool see him as the right fit at the right moment.

Contract Tension at Milan

The timing might suit them. Pulisic has just one year left on his Milan deal, with the club holding an option to extend for a further 12 months. That clause gives Milan leverage, but it also sharpens the decision: sell now, renew, or risk a drawn-out saga.

According to TEAMtalk, Pulisic is unhappy that he has not yet been approached over a new contract that reflects his status as one of Serie A’s top forwards. That frustration has prompted his entourage to quietly sound out Premier League clubs over a potential return to England.

Liverpool’s name has already been in that conversation. As recently as February, the club was reported to be among those in contact with his camp about a move back to the Premier League.

If Milan decide the World Cup is the peak moment to cash in, the door is open.

A Different Kind of Gamble

Compared to Diomande and the younger alternatives on Liverpool’s list, Pulisic represents a different kind of bet. Less about raw potential, more about immediate impact. Less about what he might become, more about what he already is.

He has lived the pressure at Chelsea. He has carried a national team. He has adapted to Italy and thrived. For a Liverpool side potentially entering a new attacking cycle, that profile carries weight.

Fowler sees a “Salah type of pathway” — a player who left England, rebuilt abroad, then returned sharper, more ruthless, and ready to explode. That is a bold comparison, not a prediction. But it underlines the scale of what Pulisic could represent if Liverpool choose that road.

Diomande may be Paris-bound. The next move is Liverpool’s. Do they double down on youth with another emerging name from their shortlist, or follow a club legend’s instinct and turn to a proven American star ready for one more crack at the Premier League?
