Liverpool Urged to Pursue Trent Alexander-Arnold Return After Struggles at Real Madrid

Liverpool might make a stunning move to bring back Trent Alexander-Arnold, just one year after his big transfer to Real Madrid. The English defender has found it tough to settle in Spain, prompting suggestions that a return to Anfield could benefit both the player and the club.

Andy Townsend Backs Liverpool Signing

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend believes Liverpool should take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold's role at Real Madrid. The 27-year-old moved to Spain on a free transfer last summer but has faced frustration trying to secure a regular place.

Townsend explained on talkSPORT why bringing him back suits Liverpool’s current needs under manager Andoni Iraola. He said, "If Trent came back, would he improve Liverpool? One hundred percent, yes. They don’t really have a right back like Jeremie Frimpong. Full backs are vital for attacking play now. Trent’s ability to deliver in advanced positions is unmatched." He admitted some fans might find the idea hard to accept but sees clear football reasons for the move.

Mourinho’s Defensive Approach Limits Opportunities

Alexander-Arnold’s struggles in Madrid relate partly to the arrival of Jose Mourinho. Mourinho seems to prefer a more defensively disciplined right-back, favoring Denzel Dumfries as a better fit for his system. This shift leaves Alexander-Arnold fighting for game time against established players like Dumfries and Federico Valverde.

Townsend noted, "With Dumfries now here, Real Madrid have plenty of options in that position. At this stage, Trent will want to be sure he can start regularly, which looks doubtful."

Tough First Season in La Liga

Statistics from Alexander-Arnold’s debut season in Spain are disappointing compared to his prime years at Liverpool. Injuries and managerial changes restricted him to only 14 league starts, stopping him from gaining rhythm or confidence.

Townsend suggested a loan move back to Liverpool might revive the player's career. "That first season must have been a big letdown. If Liverpool can arrange a loan, even for a fee between £5m and £10m, it would be worth it to bring him back. He is top-class."

Training Under Mourinho Despite Uncertainty

Even with speculation about his future, Alexander-Arnold remains committed during pre-season in Spain. He spoke positively about working with Mourinho, saying, "I’ve always admired Mourinho. His standards are very high, and I look forward to learning from him. We all want to improve and win trophies this season."
