Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has moved from background noise to the brink of a seismic deal, with Paris Saint-Germain quietly assembling the conditions for what would be a record-smashing transfer to Anfield.

The 21-year-old is Liverpool’s clear first-choice target for the wing this summer. No smokescreens, no long list. He has already indicated he wants the move, and there is confidence on Merseyside that personal terms will be straightforward once the clubs find common ground.

A fee to shake the market

PSG, fresh from back-to-back Champions League triumphs and under no pressure to sell, have planted their flag at a staggering €170m (£145m). That figure would obliterate Liverpool’s own transfer history and set a new benchmark for a wide forward in the Premier League.

Liverpool are ready to go big. Bigger, in fact, than the current British-record £125m they paid for Alexander Isak last summer. But they are not prepared to climb all the way to PSG’s asking price. The medical is not yet scheduled, but the agreement is in place. On Saturday morning, Fabrizio Romano stamped the move with his trademark confirmation, adding that Akliouche will sign a contract until June 2031 and is expected to undergo his medical next week.

Akliouche is only half of the plan.

Romano then revealed that Mika Godts has given the green light to PSG’s project. Negotiations with Ajax are underway, with the Dutch club asking for around €60m. Godts is ready to accept personal terms if the clubs can strike a deal, and PSG are optimistic they will.

With Akliouche effectively secured and Godts edging closer, PSG’s condition for Barcola’s exit is on the verge of being met. The logjam that has held Liverpool at arm’s length is starting to clear.

Romano: “Key point is the transfer fee”

Speaking in the early hours of Saturday on YouTube, Romano laid out the state of play around Barcola’s future.

Contacts are ongoing between Liverpool, PSG and the player’s camp. The framework of a move is uncomplicated: Barcola is “very keen” on Liverpool, excited by the project, and personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle.

The sticking point is simple and brutal: the transfer fee.

Liverpool must decide how far they are willing to stretch to satisfy PSG, knowing the French club have already lost several attacking players and are still juggling other business. Nothing is described as imminent. A bid is coming, but the act of submitting it is not the core issue; bridging the financial gap is.

PSG, for their part, want time. Time to close Akliouche. Time to push Godts over the line. Time to ensure they are not left short in the wide areas before sanctioning the sale of another important forward.
