Liverpool Blocks Bayern's Pursuit of Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have drawn a thick red line through Bayern Munich’s interest in Rio Ngumoha – and they are doing it with a conviction that leaves no room for negotiation.

The 17-year-old winger, fresh from a breakout 2025/26 campaign, has become the latest teenage obsession for Europe’s elite. A report last week claimed Bayern were preparing a major push to prise him away from Anfield, igniting a wave of speculation over the future of one of Liverpool’s brightest young talents.

Sources close to Liverpool made it clear they were furious that news of Bayern’s admiration had leaked, insisting there was no scenario in which Ngumoha would be allowed to leave this summer. The message was simple: this is not a player up for discussion.

Three direct goal contributions in just 551 Premier League minutes do not tell the full story of a teenager who injected energy, daring and unpredictability every time he stepped onto the pitch. “I do have a particularly well-placed person in academy football at a consultation, somebody who works in sports consultation,” he said. “I believe he said to me it’s from the best possible source, so take from that what you will. I’d never tweet anything that I didn’t believe to be true, but yeah, it stands by absolutely no chance of that happening.”

Liverpool’s Anger over Bayern Links

Behind the scenes, the mood at Liverpool has hardened. TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey reported that figures at Anfield are “deeply unhappy” with claims that Bayern have already agreed terms with Ngumoha and his representatives. Those suggestions have been flatly rejected, with senior Liverpool figures adamant there has never been any doubt about the youngster’s long-term future on Merseyside.

The word coming out of the club is stronger still. There is talk of “outrage” among Anfield chiefs at how the story has been framed elsewhere, particularly the implication that Liverpool could be outmanoeuvred over a player they see as one of the crown jewels of their academy-to-first-team pathway.

Bayern boss Vincent Kompany is understood to be a genuine admirer of Ngumoha’s talent, and that in itself is no surprise. A left-footed winger with pace, end product and the temperament to handle big moments will always attract attention from clubs of Bayern’s stature.

But Liverpool’s hierarchy are said to be confident that the German champions will not cross the line into any illegal or under-the-radar approach that breaches transfer regulations. Admiration is one thing; an actual deal is another matter entirely, and on that front Liverpool are refusing even to open the door.

The key to their stance lies in the contract strategy already mapped out for Ngumoha.

He only signed his current deal last September, committing to Liverpool until 2028 after arriving from Chelsea in 2024. That agreement, though, was always seen as a first step rather than a final safeguard.

Under current rules, 17-year-olds can only sign contracts of up to three years. Liverpool knew from the moment Ngumoha put pen to paper that they would revisit the situation as soon as he approached his 18th birthday. His rapid rise over the past year, capped by a senior debut for England and a standout club season, has simply accelerated the urgency.

Inside Anfield, the focus now is not on fielding offers but on rewarding and securing him. TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool plan to offer Ngumoha an upgraded deal, complete with a significant wage increase that reflects his growing importance to the squad and the next phase of his development.

The timing is already pencilled in. Ngumoha turns 18 on 29 August, and Liverpool intend to open talks once he reaches that milestone. The new contract is expected to stretch well beyond 2028, giving the club the long-term control they always envisaged when they first brought him north from London.

For Liverpool, this is about more than one player. It is a statement about how they protect their emerging stars in an era when Europe’s biggest clubs circle earlier and earlier. Ngumoha is the latest test case – and on this one, Anfield’s response could not be clearer.

Bayern may admire him. Others will too. But as things stand, Rio Ngumoha’s future is painted in Liverpool red, not Bavarian white.
