Liverpool's Chance to Sign Barcola as Arsenal Pursues Rogers

Aston Villa’s winger hunt has blown the summer market wide open – and Liverpool might be the biggest beneficiaries.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa have kicked off the search for a new “top winger” with Arsenal now expected to press hard to sign Morgan Rogers. The Gunners are preparing to accelerate talks for the England international, with discussions already advanced on the player’s side.

That single development shifts the board.

Arsenal turn to Rogers, not Barcola

Romano reported on Thursday night that Arsenal view Rogers as a priority wide addition. Crucially, their pursuit of the Aston Villa man is described as a separate track from their interest in Christos Tzolis. Arsenal, he says, have “always wanted both”.

The telling detail lies elsewhere. Romano states there have been “no talks for Barcola so far” from Arsenal, with their attention locked on Rogers.

For Liverpool, that matters.

Bradley Barcola has long been identified as a leading offensive target at Anfield. With Arsenal channelling their energy and resources into Rogers, the France international’s future looks less cluttered by Premier League competition. On paper, it clears Liverpool’s lane.

Liverpool’s opening – at a price

The opportunity is obvious. The obstacle is just as clear.

Paris Saint-Germain are not expected to let Barcola go cheaply. Liverpool have already been warned it will take a significant fee to prise the left-sided attacker from the Champions League holders. There will be no bargain here, no late-window discount.

So far, Liverpool’s summer has been oddly restrained. Beyond the arrival of Victor Munoz, the recruitment department has stayed patient. The World Cup has complicated negotiations across the market, but this level of waiting hints at something more deliberate.

All signs point to Barcola.

It is entirely plausible Liverpool are holding back major moves until they know the precise financial demands PSG will set. That calculation – how much Barcola will cost, and how far they are prepared to go – appears to be shaping the rest of the window.

Decision time at Anfield

This is where the strategy gets tested.

If Liverpool have effectively parked other business to keep their powder dry for Barcola, walking away late in the window because the price is too steep would leave them exposed. The squad still needs attacking depth. The calendar is unforgiving. September 1 will not wait.

By this stage, Richard Hughes and his team should have a strong sense of PSG’s expectations and the upper limit of Liverpool’s own budget. The gap between those two numbers will decide whether this long courtship ends in a signature or in a scramble for alternatives.

For now, Villa’s move to line up a new winger and Arsenal’s push for Rogers have given Liverpool something rare in a modern transfer race: a clear run at a top target.
