Lionel Messi Nears Full Ownership of Spanish Side CD Eldense

Lionel Messi, currently starring for Inter Miami, has agreed in principle to buy CD Eldense, a team competing in Spain's Segunda Division. This move marks another step in Messi's expanding involvement in Spanish football as he prepares for a possible return to Catalonia.

Agreement Details and Pending Approval

According to Marca, Messi is set to acquire 100% ownership of the club's shares with no outside parties involved. The takeover awaits formal approval from Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) after due diligence is complete. CD Eldense, based in Alicante, was owned by an international investment group led by Juan Carlos Trujillo following a purchase from Pascual Perez in October 2025.

Before Messi's interest, Argentine investor Ricardo Pini had proposed a €12 million bid, but Messi’s unexpected entry changed the course of negotiations, positioning him as the likely new owner of the club near Catalonia.

Messi Family's Growing Football Investments

This acquisition adds to the Messi family's growing football assets. Earlier this year, they bought Spanish fifth-tier side UE Cornella. Additionally, Messi and his close friend Luis Suarez joined forces to acquire Uruguayan club Deportivo LSM. His brother Matias Messi is also involved in football management as president of Lions FC.

Challenges Facing CD Eldense on the Pitch

The club has struggled recently, losing head coach Claudio Barragan after earning only two points from their first four matches. Pressure mounts to appoint a new manager quickly to stop their slide down the Segunda Division table.
