Lewis Koumas Shines in Pre-Season Match Despite Liverpool Loss
At Anfield on Sunday, the result went against Liverpool, but for one 20-year-old it still felt like a step forward.
Lewis Koumas was trusted with a start in the 3-2 pre-season defeat to AS Monaco and stayed on the pitch for 75 minutes, another significant marker in a summer that is starting to shape his Liverpool trajectory. For a young forward trying to force his way into the senior picture, that kind of exposure matters more than the scoreline.
Koumas spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City, learning the grind of regular football away from the Anfield spotlight. Now back on Merseyside, he is training every day with Liverpool’s senior players and can feel the difference.
"It's always good and obviously I train with them every day, so it's always good to try to take bits of their game and put it into mine," the Wales international told Liverpoolfc.com. Those sessions are sharpening both his touch and his understanding of what it takes to stay at this level.
He feels it in his legs too. "It's the best I've ever felt physically, so I've just got to keep training." No dressing it up, no grand claims – just a clear sense that his body is finally catching up with his ambition.
On the touchline, Andoni Iraola’s message has been simple and relentless: play with intensity, play with courage.
"He [Iraola] is just encouraging me to just play my game, press, work hard and continue to try to adapt to how he wants us to play," Koumas said. The demands are high, the instructions clear. Press. Run. Compete. Then do it again.
The setting on Sunday only heightened the occasion. A pre-season friendly in name, but a return to Anfield in front of a sizeable crowd for a player still feeling his way into the first-team environment.
"It was really good to be back at Anfield with the fans. I thought they were great," he added. For a forward, that connection with the stands can matter almost as much as the manager’s trust.
The chances are starting to come as well. Not yet the finish, but the movement is there, the positions are right.
"A few chances [for me]. I just [need to] keep getting in the area and they'll come hopefully."
If he keeps doing that, pre-season minutes like these may soon give way to something more permanent.
