Robert Lewandowski Praises Barcelona’s Signing of Rodri and Reflects on His Emotional Exit to Chicago Fire

Robert Lewandowski, now with the Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer, has expressed strong support for Barcelona's decision to sign Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City. The veteran striker believes Rodri’s experience and leadership qualities will be vital for Hansi Flick’s squad after his own departure left a leadership gap at Camp Nou.

Rodri Fills a Leadership Void

After Lewandowski moved to the United States, Flick targeted Rodri as the ideal player to take up responsibility in midfield. Lewandowski highlighted Rodri's tactical awareness and consistency on the international stage, calling him exactly what the team requires right now.

“He’s a player who knows what the team needs, how to play going forward, but also how to contribute a little more in defence,” Lewandowski said. “He’s an experienced player performing at the highest level, not just at the World Cup but for many years.”

Looking Back on Four Years at Barcelona

Lewandowski took time to reflect on his own spell in Catalonia, which began in 2022 after leaving Bayern Munich. During four seasons, he helped Barcelona win three La Liga titles and earned the Pichichi trophy, marking a memorable period before seeking new challenges abroad.

“It was a very special four years for me in Barcelona,” Lewandowski remarked. “But there comes a time when you have to try something different and take a new step, and I’m very happy now.”

Adjusting to Life in MLS

The Polish striker admitted that moving to the U.S. brought its challenges, both culturally and athletically. Settling into life with the Chicago Fire is a big transition away from European football.

“It’s normal [to need time], not only because I’m leaving Europe, but also because I’m moving to the United States,” he explained.

Keeping Tabs on Barcelona

Although Lewandowski is now focused on his MLS career, he remains engaged with Barcelona’s progress under Flick. He intends to support his former teammates from afar and expects great results with Rodri anchoring the midfield.

“I’m not a very emotional person, I’m more cold-hearted, but this is a moment when I’ll always be there to support and help FC Barcelona and my former team-mates,” Lewandowski said. “I’m watching what’s happening now and I’m sure they’re going to win a lot of games.”
