Leeds United in Talks to Sign Man City Keeper James Trafford

Leeds United have moved decisively to solve their goalkeeping problem, entering advanced talks with Manchester City over a deal for England international James Trafford.

At 23, Trafford has become Leeds’ first-choice target to take the No 1 shirt, with the club accelerating negotiations after a turbulent summer in the position. Newcastle United and Aston Villa have both tracked the goalkeeper during this window, but Leeds are currently the club pushing hardest to get a deal over the line.

City brought Trafford back to the Etihad from Burnley and handed him a meaningful role last season. He made 17 appearances in the 2025/26 campaign and kept eight clean sheets, a return that underlined his growing reputation and secured him a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel. He did not feature at the tournament, but his inclusion alone marked him out as one of the country’s emerging goalkeepers.

Leeds, meanwhile, have been forced into a rebuild between the posts. Karl Darlow has departed for Manchester United on a free transfer, while Illan Meslier has joined Arsenal, also on a free. Two senior goalkeepers out, none in. The gap has been glaring.

So the focus has turned to Trafford. Younger, homegrown, already tested at the top end of the Premier League and trusted enough to travel with England to a World Cup. For a club trying to stabilise and build, that profile matters.

The move for Trafford comes as part of a broader reshaping of Daniel Farke’s squad this summer. At the back, Tarik Muharemovic has arrived from Sassuolo in a £34m deal, a significant outlay that signals Leeds’ intent to strengthen their defensive core. In attack, Harry Wilson has joined on a free from Fulham, adding creativity and set-piece threat.

There have been notable exits as well. Pascal Struijk has gone to Brighton in an £18m move, while Isaac Schmidt has left for Young Boys for an undisclosed fee, trimming numbers and raising funds. Darlow and Meslier’s free transfers to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, though, have hit one area harder than any other.

That is why the pursuit of Trafford carries extra weight. Leeds are not just signing a goalkeeper; they are trying to anchor the next phase of the club’s development with a long-term solution in a critical position.

If they can prise him away from Manchester City, Trafford will walk into Elland Road with expectation on his shoulders and a clear mandate: make the position his, and give Leeds the security they have just lost.
