Laporta Sets Deadline for €100m Álvarez Transfer Pursuit

Joan Laporta has put a clock on Barcelona’s chase for Julián Álvarez, turning a long-running flirtation into a full-blown ultimatum.

The Barça president has confirmed that the club’s interest in the Argentine forward comes with a hard stop: the end of July. Beyond that, the Blaugrana will walk away, unwilling to let one marquee target derail a broader recruitment plan being driven by sporting director Deco.

Barcelona have reportedly thrown a €100 million offer on the table. A huge statement. But not an open-ended one. The message from the Camp Nou offices is clear: the club will not be dragged into a transfer saga that drifts into August and leaves the La Liga champions scrambling if Atlético Madrid refuse to play ball.

Atlético, though, are not just refusing to play ball. They’re refusing to even step onto the pitch.

From the Metropolitano, the response has been ice cold. Club executives have repeatedly insisted that their star striker is not for sale at any price, no matter how big the numbers become in the headlines. For them, Barcelona’s €100m proposal is little more than background noise, irrelevant to how they see the future of their attack.

CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has gone further, publicly bristling at Barça’s approach.

“I know enough about the rival club’s inner circle to realise that they act in front of the media and the fans as part of their own private circus, so it doesn’t offend me,” he said, firing a sharp shot across the Catalan bow.

He added that he maintains a good personal relationship with Laporta, but stressed that he had explicitly asked the Barça president to back off, making it crystal clear that “Julián is not for sale.”

President Enrique Cerezo then stepped in to reinforce the club’s stance while keeping the tone measured.

“Joan Laporta is a good friend, he’s a great president, and he knows very well, as do all of you, where Julián Álvarez will be playing next year,” Cerezo said, underlining Atlético’s confidence that their No. 9 will stay put.

So the institutions are dug in. Barcelona with a deadline and a fortune ready. Atlético with a flat refusal and a united front.

That leaves one man at the centre of the storm.

With both clubs entrenched, attention has swung back to Álvarez himself. The striker hinted at his ambitions during the World Cup, speaking of a move to fulfil “his dream.” Since then, though, he has chosen silence, avoiding public declarations that might inflame an already tense situation.

Inside Barcelona, the belief is blunt: only Álvarez can break the deadlock. Only a formal request from the player, a clear push for the move, would force Atlético to even consider opening the door. Without that, any hope of meaningful talks between the clubs is being treated in Catalonia as fantasy rather than strategy.

The clock is ticking toward the end of July. Barça have put their cards, and their deadline, on the table. Atlético have slammed the door shut.
