Laois Faces London in Tailteann Cup Round 2A Clash

Laois will cross the Irish Sea next as the Tailteann Cup starts to sharpen into a real championship rather than a safety net.

Justin McNulty’s side, fresh from a 1-23 to 0-19 win over Wicklow that doubled as a personal victory over his former Armagh team-mate Oisín McConville, have been paired with London in Round 2A. It is no soft landing. London rattled in four first-half goals as they dismantled Waterford on Sunday and will fancy a cut at another scalp on home soil.

The Round 2A and 2B draws, made on Monday, have scattered storylines across the country – and beyond it.

Offaly wait on Down or Leitrim

Offaly’s reward for their impressive Round 1 win away to Clare is a home tie against the winner of Down v Leitrim.

Conor Laverty’s Down host Leitrim, managed by fellow Mourne native Steven Poacher, on Saturday evening in Newry. The stakes are double-edged. Victory brings a trip to Tullamore in Round 2A. Defeat still keeps the season alive, with home advantage against Carlow in Round 2B.

One game, two very different paths.

Goals galore for Antrim, test ahead with Tipperary

Antrim hit a scarcely believable 6-17 against Carlow and still only edged through by three points after extra-time. Mark Doran’s Saffrons showed both their attacking firepower and their vulnerability in one breathless outing.

They now meet a Tipperary side who had to withstand a late Sligo surge to book their own Round 2A spot. Tipp held their nerve when the pressure came, and that composure will be tested again against an Antrim outfit that can explode into life but can just as quickly be dragged into chaos.

The other Round 2A tie sees Fermanagh welcome Wexford to Brewster Park. Wexford arrive as Division 3 finalists and with momentum behind them after dismantling Limerick in Round 1. Fermanagh, on home turf in Enniskillen, will see this as a marker game for their season.

Last-chance saloon in Round 2B

Round 2B is unforgiving. Lose, and you are gone.

Clare, beaten 1-17 to 1-14 by Offaly in Ennis, stay at home and will try to reset quickly as they welcome Longford. The Banner pushed Offaly hard; now they must turn that effort into a result or watch the summer slip away early.

Wicklow, stung by that heavy loss to Laois in Aughrim, must regroup fast as Limerick come to town. Limerick were well beaten by Wexford in their opener and arrive with their own bruises. For both, this feels like a crossroads rather than just another fixture.

Waterford, routed by London’s goal rush, at least have home advantage against Sligo. Sligo were chasing Tipperary right to the final whistle but simply ran out of time. They will not want to leave anything so late in this one.

The loser of Down v Leitrim will host Carlow in the final Round 2B pairing. Carlow, after shipping 6-17 to Antrim, know exactly how punishing this competition can be. Their season now hangs on a single away performance.

Fixtures, dates, and the New York wrinkle

Home advantage in both Round 2A and 2B goes to the first team named, with all ties to be played across 23 and 24 May.

New York, as planned, will not feature until the preliminary quarter-final stage, waiting in the long grass while the rest fight for position.

Tailteann Cup Round 2A
Antrim v Tipperary
Fermanagh v Wexford
Offaly v winner of Down/Leitrim
London v Laois

Tailteann Cup Round 2B
Wicklow v Limerick

The draw has done its work. Now it is up to counties to decide whether these are just fixtures on a list, or the days that change their season.
