Arsenal Sign World Cup Winner Misa Rodriguez for Goalkeeping Strength

Arsenal have added serious weight to their last line of defence, signing Spain international Misa Rodriguez on a free transfer in what is their sixth deal of a relentless summer window.

The 27-year-old arrives from Real Madrid, where she became a symbol of the club’s rapidly growing women’s project. Over six seasons she played 215 times – a club record – and wore the armband last year. Now she trades the white of Madrid for the red of north London, taking the number 16 shirt and stepping straight into one of the most competitive goalkeeping units in Europe.

“I’m so proud to join this great club. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in the world and I’m really excited to be part of the team and take on this new challenge,” Rodriguez said. “I want to help us compete for trophies and make more history, together with our supporters.”

She walks into a crowded but unsettled position. Daphne van Domselaar and Anneke Borbe both endured injury-hit campaigns last season, disrupting any rhythm at the back. Rodriguez is not coming to make up the numbers; she is coming to fight. Training at London Colney will be unforgiving. So will selection.

This is a goalkeeper used to pressure. Since her senior debut for Spain in 2021, Rodriguez has collected 34 caps and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Women’s World Cup, starting three matches at the tournament. Her status with the national team has shifted since then, with Barcelona’s Cata Coll taking over the No 1 shirt, but Arsenal are betting that a change of scenery and a new league will sharpen a proven big‑game performer.

The move also underlines how aggressively Arsenal are building for the 2026-27 Women’s Super League season. Last year they finished second in the WSL and pushed deep into Europe, reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League. That was a strong campaign. It still wasn’t enough for a club that measures itself in trophies.

So they have gone to work. Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler and Lisa Baum have already arrived to strengthen Renee Slegers’ options across the pitch. Now a World Cup-winning goalkeeper joins them, adding experience, personality and a different style to a dressing room that suddenly looks stacked with leaders.

Arsenal wanted depth, competition and a squad built to handle a long season on multiple fronts. With Misa Rodriguez walking through the door, they have taken another clear step towards exactly that.
