The Premier League’s biggest recruiters know exactly where the next wave of midfield talent is coming from. Right now, a 22-year-old in Monaco red is at the heart of it.

Lamine Camara, once a promising youngster at FC Metz and now a driving force in the Principality, has become the subject of a fierce scramble in England. Manchester United, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are all pushing to prise him away from Ligue 1, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

Monaco, predictably, are not in the mood to roll over.

From Metz to Monaco mainstay

Signed from Metz for €15million in July 2024, Camara has already racked up 71 appearances for Monaco. That volume of football at his age tells its own story. Coaches trust him. Team-mates lean on him. Opponents feel him.

He is a classic box-to-box midfielder in modern packaging: aggressive in the tackle, sharp over the first few yards, and comfortable gliding past pressure. His dribbling and final-third invention give him a layer of unpredictability that separates him from the usual destroyer profile.

On the international stage, Senegal have already handed him the keys. Camara started all four of their World Cup matches before that bruising round-of-32 exit to Belgium. He came back to club duty with the same intensity, helping Monaco edge Liverpool 3-2 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday – a timely reminder to one of his main suitors of exactly what he offers.

A bidding war brews

The interest has been building for months. Foot Mercato report that Manchester United and Liverpool are firmly “in the hunt”, having expressed their admiration earlier in the year and kept a close eye on his progress since.

But this is no simple two-horse race.

Crystal Palace have already moved from admiration to action, lodging what is described as a concrete offer. Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, are said to be readying an official bid of their own, aiming to crash a party usually reserved for the division’s elite.

The first battle line is financial. One version of events places Monaco’s asking price at €50m (£43m). Another, from separate reports in France, insists the Ligue 1 club are holding out for €60m (£51m) and have already rejected a €50m proposal from Palace.

Either way, the message is clear: Camara is no bargain-bin opportunity. He is being priced as a centrepiece, not a squad filler.

United’s midfield rebuild

At Old Trafford, the recruitment drive in midfield is already well underway. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have arrived, but United want a third piece to complete the reshaping of their engine room.

Several targets are slipping away. Alex Scott and Aurelien Tchouameni look likely to be missed, pushing United to widen the net. Names such as Sander Berge, Tyler Adams and Carlos Baleba are on the radar, yet Camara stands out as the high-ceiling option.

He is not the marquee name that lights up social media timelines. He is, however, the type of profile United have often lacked in recent years: a midfielder who can press, cover ground, break lines with the ball and still offer creativity in the final third. For a club trying to modernise its style, that blend matters.

Liverpool’s search for energy

Across the North West, Liverpool’s need is just as acute, if not more so. Their midfield has been crying out for fresh legs and relentless energy, and Camara fits that brief with almost uncomfortable precision.

He would bring bite off the ball and thrust on it, the sort of player who can help Alexis Mac Allister operate higher up the pitch, closer to where he does his best work. Mac Allister laboured at times last season in deeper roles; a player like Camara could free him, and with it unlock a different dimension to Liverpool’s build-up.

There is also the question of Curtis Jones. The academy graduate has drawn interest from Inter Milan, and if Liverpool choose to cash in, Camara would be an obvious candidate to inherit those minutes – and perhaps elevate them.

Monaco hold the cards… for now

For all the Premier League noise, Monaco remain in control. Camara is under contract, central to their plans, and already a proven performer in France. They can point to his World Cup exposure, his rapid development and his importance to their midfield as justification for a premium fee.

Palace have tested that resolve and been knocked back, if the reports from France are accurate. Forest are preparing to join the chase. United and Liverpool hover, aware that hesitation could see a prized target slip into the hands of clubs they would normally expect to outmuscle.
