Kylian Mbappé Reflects on Chaos of VAR Decision-Making

Kylian Mbappé has spent a career turning chaos into clarity in front of goal. This time, the chaos won.

After a rare penalty miss, the France captain laid bare the confusion that unfolded in the seconds before his spot-kick – and how a muddled sequence of decisions from the officials cut straight through his concentration.

“I didn't shoot well,” Mbappé admitted to RMC Sport, refusing to hide behind the controversy. The finish, he knew, was on him. What came before it, though, was anything but straightforward.

“So I don't know, I pick up the ball, put it down again, thinking there's a penalty, and he tells me, ‘No, wait, there's an action two minutes earlier that needs to be checked’.”

Mbappé, though, refused to turn that confusion into an alibi.

“But that's how it is, I let myself get distracted,” he said. No excuses. Just an acknowledgment that even one of the game’s most mentally sharp forwards can be thrown off by the stop-start reality of VAR-era decision-making.

“I've certainly gone through a lot of scenarios about how to concentrate on a penalty, but I hadn't considered this particular scenario yet,” he added. A telling line. Elite players script every detail of their routine. They rehearse pressure, noise, mind games from goalkeepers. They don’t rehearse being told twice that a penalty exists, then doesn’t, then might again.

For Mbappé, this was more than a missed kick. It was a snapshot of what he called “the new football”.

“It's a scenario we'll have to consider because the referee can tell you there's a penalty, but then two minutes later he can tell you there isn't. I don't know how long it lasted. It's part of the new football. It's the new football with VAR, you have to adapt.”

That last word hangs over the incident. Adapt.

The technology is not going away. The delays, the reversals, the emotional whiplash – they are now baked into the highest level of the game. For strikers like Mbappé, whose craft depends on rhythm and control of the moment, the challenge is no longer just beating the goalkeeper.

It’s beating the chaos that comes before the whistle.
