Kaizer Chiefs Lead Maxwele Chase Amid Golden Arrows Standoff

Kaizer Chiefs have stolen a march on Orlando Pirates in the chase for highly rated midfielder Maxwele, but the deal is now parked firmly on the desk of Golden Arrows boss Mato Madlala.

With the transfer window opening on 1 July, the 25-year-old’s future is fast becoming one of the most intriguing stories of the off-season.

Chiefs strike first – but hit a Madlala-sized hurdle

According to respected Kaizer Chiefs insider Innocent Mkhize, Amakhosi have already agreed personal terms with Maxwele as they move to reinforce a midfield that has lacked bite and drive in recent campaigns.

The problem sits elsewhere.

The deal is not complete, and the decisive voice now belongs to Arrows chairlady Madlala. Mkhize reports that while Chiefs have an understanding with Maxwele, Madlala’s preference is to see her asset join Orlando Pirates rather than make the switch to Naturena.

Maxwele’s rise over the past season explains the scramble.

After Royal AM’s expulsion from the Premier Soccer League in 2025, he arrived at Golden Arrows on a free transfer, a smart piece of opportunism that quickly paid off. In his first campaign with the Durban side, the Mthatha-born midfielder became a regular, making 23 league appearances and featuring in cup competitions.

He finished the season with three goals and one assist across all competitions – modest numbers on paper, but they only tell part of the story.
