As the August heat tightens its grip on Italy, Juventus find themselves in a familiar position: chasing the final piece of a puzzle that still looks incomplete after last season’s underwhelming sixth-place finish.

This time, the name at the centre of the story is clear. Jhon Lucumí.

Lucumí picks his side

The Bologna defender has been on Juve’s radar all summer, one of the leading candidates in their search for a defensive upgrade. The negotiations between clubs are still grinding on, but one crucial hurdle has already been cleared.

According to Tuttosport, Juventus and Lucumí have reached an agreement on personal terms. The Colombian is ready to sign a five-year contract worth €2.5 million per season, plus a further €1 million in potential bonuses. For a player on Bologna wages, that is a serious step up. It also underlines how badly he wants this move.

This is not one of those vague “interest” stories. Lucumí has made his preference obvious. Multiple outlets report that he is holding out specifically for Juventus and has already turned down more lucrative proposals to keep that dream alive.

Turning down Turkey, waiting for Turin

The list of clubs he has rebuffed is not insignificant. Galatasaray came calling. So did Besiktas, now coached by Vincenzo Italiano, the very manager who worked with Lucumí at Bologna. On paper, those are attractive destinations: big clubs, passionate fanbases, competitive wages.

He said no.

Inter were mentioned earlier in the window. A few Premier League sides circled as well. That noise has faded in recent weeks. The reason is simple: Lucumí has locked his sights on the Allianz Stadium.

Right now, Juventus are the only club he truly wants.

Bologna hold their line

There is, of course, the small matter of Bologna. The Emilia-Romagna side know what they have and are not inclined to give it away cheaply. After Lucumí’s €28 million buyout clause expired in mid-July, they reportedly set their asking price at around €25 million.

For a club like Juventus, reshaping their squad and balancing their books at the same time, that figure is not insignificant. Especially when the defensive department is already crowded.

Juve must sell before they buy

This is where the deal slows down.

Juventus are understood to need an exit before they can bring in another centre-back. Names such as Federico Gatti, Lloyd Kelly and Juan Cabal hover over the discussion. One of them, or perhaps another defender, may have to make way to clear both space in the squad and room in the budget.

Until that happens, Lucumí waits.

He is effectively in limbo: committed to Bologna by contract, but emotionally and professionally aligned with a move to Turin. The message from his side is clear. He wants Juventus. He has structured his summer around that possibility. He has already sacrificed richer offers to keep it alive.

Juventus, for their part, have responded. They have made him their defensive priority, agreed the framework of a long-term deal and signalled their intent. The admiration is mutual. The logic of the transfer is obvious.
