Nico Elvedi's Exciting Move to Leeds United
Nico Elvedi is counting down to one moment.
Not his debut tackle. Not his first header. The walk.
The walk through the Elland Road tunnel.
The 29-year-old centre-back has signed for Leeds United from Borussia Monchengladbach and already has that first stride into the light fixed in his mind.
“I am very happy to be here, everything is done and I can't wait to play for this club,” Elvedi said. “It is such a big club with amazing fans and I also can't wait to play in this stadium with the fans.
“I saw some videos from the stadium, from the fans, and I love it.
“Everybody told me it is a special moment to go through the tunnel and see the atmosphere. I can't wait to see that.”
World Cup recommendation
The move to West Yorkshire did not come out of nowhere. Elvedi had been well briefed.
During the 2026 World Cup, Switzerland team-mate Noah Okafor became an unofficial Leeds scout, selling the club to the defender with story after story.
The message stuck. Okafor, Elvedi said, told him “many good things about the club” – enough for the centre-back to like what he heard and commit to a new chapter in England.
What Leeds are getting
Those inside German football know exactly what kind of defender is arriving.
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, German football reporter Christian Hornung painted a clear picture of Elvedi’s profile.
“He is reliable and tough in one-v-one situations,” Hornung said. “He has a really good tackle and is good at heading.
“He isn't a magician on the pitch but he does what he can.
“If you pick Nico Elvedi then you know what you get and I think he's a really fantastic player.
“It's a really good deal for Leeds.”
No grand promises. No flashy labels. Just a defender whose reputation rests on consistency, timing and aerial strength.
Now the videos have to make way for the real thing. Soon enough, Elvedi will find out if that “special moment” in the Elland Road tunnel lives up to everything he has been told.
