Arsenal staff fully expect the defender to rejoin the squad in Spain once this phase of his individual programme is completed in the UK.

For Timber, it is another detour on what has been a brutal road since his £34m move from Ajax in July 2023. His Arsenal story was supposed to ignite on the opening weekend of that first season. Instead, it was almost over before it began. An anterior cruciate ligament injury wrecked his debut campaign, turning a marquee signing into a long-term absentee in the space of 90 minutes.

Just as he began to string games together last season and show why Arteta had pushed so hard to bring him in, an ankle injury halted his momentum and kept him out for two months near the run-in. He fought back in time to play in the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, only for a subsequent groin issue to cost him a place at the World Cup.

This latest groin complaint is part of that same narrative, but Arsenal are determined it will not define the next chapter. The club’s medical and performance teams have mapped out a detailed route back to full sharpness before the new Premier League season, and Timber’s brief departure from the camp is written into that script.

When he is right physically, the difference is obvious. Timber has become a fundamental piece of Arteta’s structure, the kind of defender modern coaches build around. Nominally a right-back, he shifts inside with ease, gives Arsenal an extra midfielder in possession, and brings a calm, almost cold-blooded composure to their build-up play.

That influence was stamped across last season’s title-winning campaign. Timber emerged as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back, making 30 Premier League appearances as the club ended their long wait for a league crown, their first since 2004. He did more than just defend his flank; he helped dictate the rhythm of matches from it.

Across all competitions, the numbers underline his importance. Forty-four appearances, four goals, seven assists. Not the output of a conservative full-back clinging to the touchline, but of a defender trusted to shape games in the final third as well as at the back.

Arsenal have moved decisively to protect that asset. Timber is tied to the Emirates Stadium until the summer of 2028, a contract that reflects how central he is to Arteta’s long-term vision. The manager has built a side that leans heavily on technical defenders who can survive under pressure and start attacks with the same conviction they show in stopping them. Timber fits that mould as neatly as anyone in the squad.

So his temporary exit from the Spanish camp will have jarred when the news first filtered through. Another injury line next to his name, another flight home. But inside the club, the message is consistent: this is part of the plan, a controlled reset rather than a relapse.

The new season looms, with Arsenal now carrying the weight of champions and the expectation that comes with it. If Timber can finally step into a campaign without the shadow of rehab and setbacks, the question will not be whether he starts at right-back.
