Germany have confirmed Klopp as their new head coach on a four-year deal, a move that instantly changes the temperature around a national team still nursing scars from a bruising World Cup exit. The announcement came at the DFB campus in Frankfurt on Monday morning, but the real work began weeks ago, across the Atlantic.

From New York studio to Germany’s touchline

When Julian Nagelsmann resigned after Germany’s World Cup campaign ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat to Paraguay in the last 32, the DFB did not shop around. They went straight for Klopp.

At the time, he was in New York, working as a television pundit while the tournament played out without him. The conversations started there. Quietly at first, then with growing intent. On 11 July, the DFB revealed it had reached an agreement in principle with the former Liverpool manager. Now the deal is signed and sealed, running through to the 2030 World Cup.

To free him from his role with Red Bull, where he had been serving as head of global soccer, the DFB made a significant gesture: a €1 million donation to Red Bull’s non-profit foundation, Wings for Life. It was the final piece in a pursuit that underlined just how determined German football’s powerbrokers were to land their man.

A rebuilt bench: familiar faces, familiar ideas

Klopp will not arrive alone. His trusted lieutenants are expected to follow him into the national setup.

Pep Lijnders, who worked alongside Klopp for years at Liverpool and most recently left Manchester City after Pep Guardiola’s departure, is set to join the staff. Peter Krawietz, another long-time assistant from Anfield and Borussia Dortmund days, is also expected to be part of the new backroom team.

Reports indicate Sven Bender, who played under Klopp at Dortmund and understands the intensity and demands of his football, will come in as well. It points to continuity of method: high energy, aggressive pressing, and a tight inner circle that already speaks Klopp’s language.

A return he once ruled out

Klopp walked away from Liverpool in 2024 after nine transformative years, his energy reserves, as he put it, running low. He left with a Champions League, a Premier League, a FIFA Club World Cup, an FA Cup and two League Cups, and with the sense that he had squeezed every last drop out of a remarkable era.

After a six-month break, he resurfaced not in a dugout but in the boardroom, taking on the role of Red Bull’s head of global soccer. From there, he spoke openly about having no desire to return to club management. The daily grind, the never-ending cycle, no longer appealed.

The national team, though, is a different proposition. Fewer games. More time to think, to plan, to build something broader than a single season’s campaign. For a coach who has already conquered club football in two countries, the lure of leading Germany into another World Cup cycle proved strong enough.

A reset for a wounded giant

Germany’s exit to Paraguay on penalties in the last 32 left the DFB with a familiar problem: a proud football nation adrift at major tournaments. This appointment is their boldest attempt yet to reset that trajectory.
