That number still sits a long way below the €500 million release clause Atletico have pointed to in every conversation. It is also the line they have used to send a message: they will not sell their star man to a direct La Liga rival on the cheap.

Barcelona do not see it that way. They insist they can afford a deal at that level and believe the dynamics of the situation have shifted since Alvarez went public with his desire to leave. Those comments were music to their ears. In their view, the player has already taken the most difficult step by confronting Atletico and stating his preference.

Relations between the clubs have been strained in recent weeks, and that tension hangs over every phone call. Even so, Barcelona are banking on the idea that Atletico, under pressure from a player who wants out, will at least agree to sit at the table once the World Cup dust settles.

From Barça’s perspective, Alvarez’s public stance is not just a detail. It is leverage.

The recruitment team also know the squad needs more than just a marquee forward. Defensive reinforcements are on the wishlist, but the numbers have to add up. That calculation already cost them one opportunity: Marc Cucurella.

Barcelona liked Cucurella as an option, but not at any price and not without sacrifice. To bring him back, they would have needed to part with Alejandro Balde, a step they were not ready to take. Real Madrid pounced, and Cucurella headed to the other side of the capital instead.

One key piece of that puzzle is Ansu Fati. Once seen as the natural heir to the club’s greatest stars, he is now on the brink of a permanent exit. Monaco are expected to activate an €11 million buy option, closing a chapter that once promised so much and now serves as a reminder of how quickly careers and plans can pivot.

If that deal goes through as anticipated, it will not transform Barcelona’s finances on its own. But it is a step. And right now, every step matters.

So the standoff continues. Atletico cling to a €500m clause and the principle of not strengthening a rival. Barcelona sharpen a €130m bid and lean on a player’s dream of Camp Nou. Alvarez has made his intentions clear.
