Joshua Zirkzee's Next Move: Transfer Rumors and Future in Football

Joshua Zirkzee stands at a crossroads again. One big move behind him, another looming on the horizon, and a career that still feels like it’s waiting to truly begin.

According to The Athletic, the Dutch forward has become one of this summer’s more intriguing transfer targets, with a cluster of clubs circling as Manchester United show a willingness to listen to offers. After a bruising spell in English football, Zirkzee is weighing up his next step carefully.

Two unnamed Premier League rivals have already tested the waters, checking on his situation and United’s stance. Ajax also made an enquiry, sensing an opportunity to bring him back to the Eredivisie. That door appears to have closed almost as quickly as it opened, though, with the Dutch club now unlikely to push on following the arrivals of Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare. Their attacking rebuild seems complete; Zirkzee, for now, is surplus to that particular plan.

The real noise comes from Italy. Juventus have moved with intent, working on a loan deal and, crucially, receiving Zirkzee’s approval for a return to Serie A. For the player, it would be a step back into a league where he looked at ease, rather than a retreat. For Juve, it’s a calculated gamble on a talent who has already shown he can thrive in that environment.

When United paid £36.5 million to sign him from Bologna in 2024, they believed they were buying the finished article of his breakout 2023–24 Serie A season: a technically sharp, inventive forward who could knit attacks together and score important goals. The Premier League offered a harsher reality.

The demands of English football have bitten hard. Zirkzee has managed just 19 starts in 56 league appearances over the past two seasons, returning only five Premier League goals. Those numbers tell their own story. He has flickered rather than burned, often on the fringes of games, struggling to impose himself in a league that rarely gives second chances to forwards still finding their rhythm.

And yet, the talent hasn’t vanished. It resurfaced in pre-season, with Zirkzee producing a reminder of his quality in a strong display against Rosenborg, capped by an excellent goal. The technique, the composure, the confidence in tight spaces – all still there, waiting for the right stage.

That is what Juventus are betting on: that the player who lit up Serie A in Bologna colours can be revived in black and white. For United, a loan could ease the logjam in attack and protect value in an asset they are clearly prepared to move on from.

Zirkzee’s next decision will shape more than just this season. At 23, he is edging out of the “prospect” bracket and into the territory where a forward must define himself. Is he the Serie A creator who once looked destined for the top, or the Premier League nearly-man who never quite found his stride?
