Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United career has never really caught fire. Now Juventus are trying to offer him a way out – and a way back to a league where he once looked far more at home.

Reports in Italy and England say Juve are in advanced talks with United over a loan deal that would include a £30 million option to buy. For a player who arrived in 2024 with big expectations and a sizeable fee, it feels like a crossroads that has come around quickly.

A striker stuck in neutral

Zirkzee, 25, has struggled badly to convince at Old Trafford. Five goals in 56 Premier League appearances is a brutal return for a forward signed to be part of United’s next attacking era. He never nailed down a starting spot under Ruben Amorim, and Michael Carrick has not been persuaded to build around him either.

The Dutchman wants to change that. Those close to him say he still believes he can force his way into Carrick’s plans, and that he sees the promise of European football in 2026/27 as a chance to finally make himself relevant at United. He even pushed for a move in January, only to be told the door was closed.

United’s stance has softened. The club are now understood to be open to a loan with a £30m option, despite paying around £36.5m to bring him in two years ago. Internally, there is a recognition that the proposed figure reflects his current value, not his potential on paper.

Juventus change course

Juve were initially working on a deal for Kolo Muani after his difficult loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur. That chase has stalled, with Paris Saint-Germain and the Turin club unable to find common ground on a fee. So the focus has swung sharply to Zirkzee.

The Italian giants are described as the most serious contenders for his signature, moving quickly to open talks with United and the player’s camp. Roma’s long-standing interest has not disappeared, but Juventus have accelerated negotiations and are now seen as being in the strongest position.

Crucially, Zirkzee’s camp are said to have responded positively to Juve’s approach. The idea of a return to Serie A appeals. It is a league he knows, and one that seems to know him.

Back to a league that suits him

Before United, Zirkzee built his reputation in Italy with a season on loan at Parma and two more at Bologna. There, his blend of link-up play, technical quality and movement between the lines looked far more natural than it has in England.

He is understood to view Serie A as a better tactical fit for his game. In Italy, he can drift, combine, and orchestrate attacks. In the Premier League, he has too often looked like a forward caught between roles – not the penalty-box predator the league often demands, and not influential enough outside it to compensate.

His recent display in United’s 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg hinted at the player many expected to see more often. Sharp, involved, dangerous. But those flashes have not translated into consistent league form.

Squeezed out at United

The reality of his situation at Old Trafford is stark. Zirkzee sits behind Benjamin Sesko and Mateus Cunha in the pecking order, with both preferred options through the middle. The potential return of Marcus Rashford to a more central role threatens to push him even further down.

That hierarchy leaves little room for a 25-year-old still trying to prove he belongs at this level. United, chasing a return to the elite, cannot wait forever. Juventus, reshaping their attack, can offer minutes, responsibility and a system built to his strengths.

So the equation is simple. United get a clean financial line and the chance to move on from a signing that never quite worked. Juventus get a technically gifted forward who already understands the rhythm of Serie A. And Zirkzee gets a decision that could define the next phase of his career.
