Joshua Grant: Rising Goalkeeper Joins Jamaica for Unity Cup

Joshua Grant, the teenage goalkeeper making quiet waves in USL League One, is about to step onto a far bigger stage.

The 18-year-old FC Naples shot-stopper has been named in Jamaica’s squad for the upcoming Unity Cup in London, England, a call-up that hands him the chance of a first senior cap as the Reggae Boyz open the four-team tournament against India. Nigeria and Zimbabwe complete a field that will test Jamaica’s depth and nerve — and give its next generation a close look at international football’s demands.

For Grant, it comes at the crest of a rising wave.

On Saturday, he recorded his first professional shutout, a composed two-save display in Naples’ 1-0 win over Westchester SC at the Paradise Coast Sports Complex. He has only two league appearances this season as understudy to Lalo Delgado, but he has already left a statistical imprint, carrying a -0.32 Goals Prevented mark that underlines how much he has done with the minutes he’s earned.

His impact has not been limited to league play. In the Prinx Tires USL Cup on May 17, Grant stepped into the spotlight again, helping Naples edge Sporting Club Jacksonville in a penalty shootout. He produced the decisive save in the fourth round, a moment that sharpened his reputation as a calm presence in high-pressure situations.

Now the Lauderhill, Fla. native swaps club colors for country.

“It’s a huge deal,” Grant said of the call-up. “My senior national team, playing with guys who are way older than me and captaining my under-20 team. The momentum is great. I love it here in Naples, and I love my country. Both of them, it’s an amazing feeling.”

That dual allegiance — to a club giving him his break and a national team trusting his potential — frames a pivotal stretch in his young career. At 18, he is still captaining Jamaica’s Under-20s. In London, he could be standing behind seasoned internationals, listening to the anthem from a different place in the lineup.

He will not be the only fresh face in the group. Jamaica’s experimental squad also includes former Richmond Kickers Academy prospect Nicholas Simmonds, now with FC Dallas, who has earned his first senior call-up. The inclusion of both players signals a deliberate look toward the future, even as Jamaica chases results in a compact, competitive tournament.

For Grant, the path runs from Lauderhill to Naples to London, with the gloves and the goalmouth as his constant companions. The next time he pulls them on, he may be doing it for the Reggae Boyz, under the lights, with a first cap on the line.
