Jose Mourinho's Heartfelt Decision: From Manchester United to Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has revealed he agreed to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United – only to tear up the script and follow his heart back to Chelsea.

The Portuguese coach, speaking in a new Netflix documentary about his career, confirmed for the first time that he had shaken hands on becoming the man to walk into the Old Trafford dugout after Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

“When I left Real Madrid, I signed to go to Manchester United after Sir Alex,” Mourinho says in the series, lifting the lid on one of the great sliding-door moments of modern English football.

The job that never was

Ferguson, who had just closed the book on 26 years in charge and 13 Premier League titles, wanted Mourinho. He did not hide it.

“I sat him down and explained the situation,” Ferguson recalls. “As far as I was concerned, he was accepting. And then, within hours, it changed.”

United, of course, went in a different direction. David Moyes, then Everton manager, arrived as the hand-picked heir, the banner at the Stretford End declaring him “The Chosen One” as the club tried to move from one era-defining figure to another.

Behind the scenes, though, another story was unfolding.

What changed was not United’s desire. It was Mourinho’s conscience.

A phone call, and tears

Ferguson describes the moment the deal unravelled.

“One night, he phoned me and he was crying,” the former United manager says. “He said: ‘Alex, I can't take it. I've given my word to Chelsea and I'm not going to break my word.’”

Ferguson understood. Just not without a sting.

“The reason he gave to me I could understand, but I was disappointed,” he admits.

For Mourinho, the pull of Stamford Bridge proved stronger than the prospect of inheriting the biggest job in English football. Chelsea was not just another offer. It was the club where he had exploded onto the Premier League scene, where he had delivered back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, where the bond with owner, squad and supporters had already been forged.

“But one thing is love for football, another thing is love for a certain club,” Mourinho explains. “I think this is more powerful than love for football and, fundamentally, after Real Madrid I needed to feel that I'm loved.”

Heart over history

Mourinho admits the magnitude of what he walked away from.

He was “very flattered” to be asked to replace Ferguson, he says, because “Manchester United has an incredible appeal”. The chance to follow the most successful manager in Premier League history does not come twice for many. For him, it almost didn’t come once.

“For me to lose the chance to be the coach to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson was dramatic,” he concedes. “But I don't regret it because it was a decision that I made with my heart.”

He chose emotion over legacy. Familiarity over the unknown. Chelsea over United.

The consequences were immediate. Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge in 2013 and quickly reasserted his authority, winning his third Premier League title with the club and adding the League Cup to his collection.

At Old Trafford, the post-Ferguson turbulence began. Moyes lasted just 10 months before being sacked, unable to halt the slide or live up to the impossible task of replacing a legend.

The second chance

United came back for Mourinho in 2016. This time, there was no late twist.

He arrived as Louis van Gaal’s successor, charged with restoring authority and trophies to a club still searching for a new identity. Across two and a half intense years, he delivered the League Cup and the Europa League, offering silverware and a hint of the old United swagger, before a downturn in results led to his dismissal in December 2018.

The documentary revelation throws fresh light on that later spell. Mourinho did not just manage Manchester United; he once turned them down at the moment of maximum power and prestige.

He chose the embrace of Chelsea, and a familiar blue, over the daunting task of stepping directly into Ferguson’s shoes. United chose a different path, one that would define the next decade.
