Lee’s Dream Debut Sparks Atlético Madrid Victory Over Málaga
Atlético Madrid had to grind for this one. For 45 minutes the Metropolitano watched a familiar scene: red-and-white shirts camped in Málaga’s half, little incision, even less danger.
Without Julián Álvarez, Diego Simeone’s side mustered just four efforts before the break, scraping together an xG of 0.10. Lots of running, almost no threat. Málaga sat deep, soaked it up, and Atlético ran into the same wall over and over again.
Simeone did not wait much longer.
Triple change, instant payoff
On 57 minutes, the Argentine ripped up his frontline. Lee, Baena and Giuliano Simeone all came on in a sweeping triple substitution that changed the temperature of the game.
The impact was immediate. The tempo rose, Atlético started to win second balls higher up, and Málaga’s back line finally began to creak.
Lee, on his competitive debut, delivered the breakthrough. Collecting the ball on the edge of the area, the former Valencia, Mallorca and PSG midfielder shaped a curling effort beyond the goalkeeper and into the corner. One chance, one ruthless finish. The stadium erupted; the tension snapped.
The pressure did not ease on Málaga. With Atlético now playing with greater freedom, Baena stepped up over a free-kick and produced a spectacular strike to make it 2–0, killing off a match that had looked anything but straightforward.
Two substitutes, two outstanding goals. Exactly the “leap in quality” their coach demanded.
Simeone hails his game-changers
Speaking afterwards, Simeone cut a satisfied but honest figure as he dissected the contrast between both halves.
“We try to start the game with the boys who are in the best condition to compete,” he told reporters, reflecting on a first period he summed up simply: “In the first half it was running. We didn't have scoring chances.”
The tone changed when he turned to his bench.
“In the second half the changes took a leap in quality. All the boys gave us the leap we needed. The two goals are two great goals and we were able to win a game that was not easy.”
From sterile possession to decisive finishing, Atlético’s substitutes had shifted the entire rhythm of the contest.
Lee’s landmark debut
For Lee, the night carried an extra layer of significance. His debut goal made him Atlético’s third-youngest debut scorer in La Liga in the 21st century, at 25 years and 181 days.
It was not just the finish that stood out. He also ended the match with joint team-high numbers for chances created and tackles won, underlining both his creativity and his work rate in Simeone’s demanding system.
“The first games were very important. We lacked training. It was very important to get the win,” Lee said afterwards, quick to spread the praise.
“The whole team has done a great job. Thanks to the work of the first half we were able to get the victory. We continue to work hard. The rhythm is missing, but with work we will improve individually and collectively.”
Atlético leave with three points, a clean sheet and a debutant already writing himself into the club’s statistics. The rhythm may still be missing, as Lee admits, but if the bench keeps delivering like this, how dangerous will this team look once it finally clicks?
